I can not imagine how slow that will be

The engine specifications suggest about as slow as the land rover diesel engines.

Mercedes Benz OM617.952, 5-cylinder turbo from W123 300D:
125 hp and 180 ft-lb

200 Tdi and 300 Tdi:
111 bhp and 195 ft-lb

I swapped an OM617 into a dangerously underpowered W123 240D, which originally had the OM616, a 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated diesel. While this car is not going to win drag races or autocross events, the OM617 pulls strongly through the entire range. It cruises all day at 65-75 mph with pedal left over. Currently there are over 275,000 miles on the clock. Even being heavy on the skinny pedal it averages 25-28 mpg. Obviously the Discovery weighs more, approximately 4500 lbs versus 3500 lbs, and is geared lower, 3.54 versus 3.07, both of which negatively affect fuel efficiency.

Could be fun to do a vegoil conversion to it.

Yeah, that might be cool. I'd be very interested to see how well it drives. Anyone close by going to look at it? Let us know how it is.

I bet it really gets below 20 MPG.

Yeah bro, the 617 only gets 20 mpg when it's not in a Disco.

In fact, whenever you put a non-standard diesel into a Disco the motor loses all its original properties and instantly transforms into a 12 mpg pile-of-shit.

The 200/300tdis, however, are powered by magical elf farts and somehow -- despite being completely unremarkable motors -- achieve the level of efficiency in a Land Rover that no other diesel can!

I hear Iran just started a secret underground 300tdi project.

It's a mad, mad world. :D
