try and connect an IPOD to a 98 Disco. I still have stock unit with no cd connected currently.

I wonder if anyone has figured out how to use the cd wires to directly connect an ipod.

Thanks

proably your easiest way would be one of those cassette adapters to the headphone jack or lineout jack of your ipod
take care

For some reason on my 2001 DII when I tried a casette tape [tried 3 differnet ones], it'd only play like one channel of the music.. i forget if it was only front/back or left/right .. but it wasn't playing perfectly.

I ended up going with the iTrip, the wireless FM one.. i'll give it maybe a 7/10 .. when its working, its generally working good.. when its off, you gotta fumble with it for a few minutes to figure it out again..

I'd like to find a way to use my iPod too. On my Jeep I put in a Jensen system with an auxilary port on the front... but I'd rather keep the stock system in my Disco. Anyone know what sort of connectors are on the back of the stock head unit? I'd more than willing to give up the use of my cd-changer to add my iPod.

I bought the FM transmitter. IT SUCKS. It works fine when I hold it up to the back window (where my antenna is), but not very well up by me. I don't know if the stock rover head unit has pre-outs, but if you have an aftermarket unit, get a cable with RCA jacks/headphone jack.

Someone here wired a laptop into their system so I am sure it can be done. I wish I could remember who that was , it was pretty slick

Atlantic British's IPOD interface

Does anyone know how that works? Is it Ipod specific, or generic?

i also used the tape adapter with poor results, then switched to the I-trip.
after spending quite a bit if time on ipodlounge.com, i was able to work around the quirks that the transmitter poses. one of the biggest things i found was that if the area that you live in is bombarded with FM signals, you will generally have poor results. while i'm in metro SLC, i'm down on the in the public radio station frequencies, once i'm out of the metro area, any clear station will work.

i would also be interested in a plug in option (as i use my ipod quite a bit), that will work with the stock head unit/six disc changer.

i also read on ipodlounge, that there is a way to boost the FM frequency modulator. in a sense making your Ipod a mini radio station, the article talked about being able to transmit your music to cars driving next to you etc...

The tape works, I had problems in the begining, then i put a tape in the tape player and rewinded it. It works perfectly now, you may want to try that. I have used this for about 3 years now and have done well with it.

that's funny, i actually tried that, as well as cleaning it with a head cleaner, in the end, the sound was less than stellar.

There are some adapters available from BlitzSafe (http://www.blitzsafe.com/blitz_cata...es/inst_lrovaux_dmxv1/inst_lrovaux_dmxv1.html) and Peripheral Electronics (http://peripheralelectronics.com) but none for the '98.

I used the cassette adapter, but had a problem with it stopping and changing directions all the time when the music would get loud. It turns out if I turned down the volume on the MP3 player this problem went away. It's not as good as being wired in or a wired FM modulator.

You sure the tape was on the right side???

I use the sony casette adapter on the '03 Disco II S with zero problems. Sounds GREAT.
At first I thought, Damn, this sounds like crap... Then I flipped the tape to the other side, and **BBOOOOOOMMM** (almost blew my speakers).. Sound was awesome.

..And I've had my share of stereo probs with the iPod. On my 350z, I've used the FM transmitter (SUCKS), then tried the Kenwood FM antenna itermediary unit (like what they use on XM radio setups) - also not very great sound, but better. Finally I bought a new head unit with a line in on the rear that I hooked a 1/8" -> RCA cable to. That worked very well of course, but the head unit was not great quality.

The Disco with tape deck sounds really good with the tape adapter for me...but mine is an '03 model... Not sure if it's a different head unit.

As for location with the ITrip, I put the Ipod in the slide out cup holder [under the stereo], and i'm guessing that gives a clear enough shot to the back antenna... I had it working real good for about a month, and then I re-programmed the frequency to work with a boom-box, and then couldnt figure out the right frequency again with the in car radio.. I need to spend some time and get it working again..

Marc, don't have an Ipod, my MP3 player is from Creative, so I haven't tried the I-trip. But the FM transmitter from Belkin is relatiely inexpensive, and I have used it in both the Disco and the Freelander and also around the house with no problems, so I'd say it's pretty good for what they charge for it.

There is also a $29 model with 4 fixed frequencies and no external power (batteries only). That one works ok too, but you only get about 10 hours out of each set of 2 AAA batteries.

I've just started reseaching ipod additions and so far the Sonnet podfreq seems to be getting good reviews .

three times the price of Belkin though.....but then its for a land rover...about three times more expensive to keep on the road than other vehicles.....
