The Lou!
It's been a very long year working on my truck in spurts. Now that the 24v to 12v conversion is 99% complete, I am to the point where I can hook up the battery and give the key a turn. And I am scared outta my mind!!!!

It LIVES!!!!!!!

Hit accessory and tail lights are on, fuel pump is on, Hellas work, and no smoke appeared. Took out the fuel pump fuse, took a deep breath, and hit the starter switch and the engine turned over! :victory:

Just have to reconnect the driveshaft, hook the exhaust back up, refit the air cleaner, and I'll be ready to actually attempt a full fledged start.

Color me tickled pink! :D

Outstanding! Did you swap out that big-ass, shielded, 24 v. dizzy for a 'normal' 45D4? I mention this as a caveat. When I finished a major rebuild, the one piece that got left on the workbench was the distributor drive gear adapter - that little steel "donut". The engine would not start after a complete rebuild - until I realized it was firing 180 degrees out. Swapped the wires and it ran perfectly, but I had to set things right. 1-3-4-2.... Replacing the helical drive gear is no problem with the engine sitting on a stand, but a major PITA once it's in place....

Cheers

I did indeed get rid of that bulky PITA distributor. :) I got an electronic 45D copy from SimonBBC. I was running it for a few days before I decided to tear everything out and start anew with 12v. And the British Starters high ratio starter is pretty darned sweet for anyone that has been looking at them.

I haven't actually fired anything up yet. Just far enough along to turn the key and get a nice crank over. I've still got lots to tidy up before giving it a full fledged start up. But it was a huge relief nonetheless.

Just disappointed that my horn, front parks, and headlamps aren't working. Gotta spend some more time checking my relay wiring to those components and my grounds I reckon. I took the rest of the weekend off so he'll have to wait a little while longer.

Got all the lights fixed. And last weekend it was turning over and firing like crazy...very close to starting. Just a timing issue at this point.

Go back out there today and reset my TDC and adjusted the distributor again assuming I was 180 out. Turns over and get absolutely no firing. Got 12v going into the + on the coil but no spark coming out. Tried a different coil and the same thing.

I give up for tonight. Need some downtime and I'm tired of fixing broken shit this week.

I think some white chicken chili and a martini will bring my spirits back up.

OK - let's work backwards on this...stick a metal object like a screwdriver blade into a spark plug wire. Hold it close to the block while a friend hits the starter. Spark? (Should be a strong, blue one....) If you get a spark, timing is the only issue.

No spark and I'd think that the points are shorting (the little plastic insulator is fiddly if you haven't done it a dozen or more times....) or the condensor could be bad. I've had a new one be bad right out of the box....

Take the top of the dizzy off and remove the rotor. Use a non-conductive tool on the point's spring to open 'em. Spark upon opening? If there's no spark here, there won't be any to be 'amplified' by the coil....

You've got TDC established, right? But since you swapped the 24v dizzy for a 12 volt one, the drive gear adapter - the steel donut - may not be part of the picture. When everything is set up correctly and #1 cylinder is at TDC, the rotor should be pointing to 1 o'clock and cylinder #1....

Cheers
