98' D1 with approx. 90000 on the clock. Bought the truck about 1.5 years ago and never heard a tick. However, the thermostat was stuck open and the engine never warmed up properly. I started noticing the tick after replacing the thermostat. I local LR indie shop listed and thought it was a stuck lifter. So far I've:
-Added Marvel Mystery to oil
-Added Rislone to oil
-SeaFoamed the air intake after the MAF
-Dropped the oil sump, cleaned it and the oil pick-up
I'm about to try an engine flush.
If anything I think the tick has gotten louder, not sure why.
I'd like to know what parts to get before I tear into it so I have everything I need on hand.

Yes I've searched and done done lots of reading. I've some up with stuck lifter, oil cooler line, rocker arms. I run Rotella 15-40 with WIX filters.
Any ideas on what it is or further troubleshooting I can try?

mine is making the same noise!! i've tracked it down to the passenger side catalytic converter. use a mechanics stethescope, from harbor freight 5.99, to confirm...

I don't think mine's a cat. It seems too consistent and sounds "mechanical" to me. I'll check it again just to be sure though.

check the downpipe nuts for looseness, they can make a clacking tick that sounds like the motor is knocking if they are loose or the gasket is blown out.

also, might try RotellaT 5/40 synthetic. it seems to quiet down these motors in my experience.

Try running some seafoam in the oil before your oil change. It will thin out the oil and might just loosen up the lifter. I'm not sure if the Marvel Mystery Oil does the same thing or not.

Well I know that both my downpipes are leaking where they meet the manifolds. I just never thought that could be the culprit.

Ya defiantly check that first. Look for black soot on the bottom of the manifolds too as they can crack too.

This thread is retarded.

Why? Because someone has a problem with their truck and is reaching out the the online community for help? Isn't that the point of the Discovery - Technical Discussions forum?

At your mom's
I located exhaust leaks with a section of aquarium air hose (1/4"?) x 4'. Turns out there's also something clacking under the rocker cover like a sticky lifter or peened rod.

I put one end of the hose up to my ear canal and poked around with the other. You'll know it when you find the source.

Don't be a dipshit and get wrapped your ass around the shaft or let your puca beads hang in the pulleys.
