New to me LWB. Runs, drives, shifts well, very quiet and smooth. Oil level is fine, not sure what weight it is though. Been driving it for two weeks.

Two days ago it just suddenly is making this ticking sound I can hear from inside, and very distinctly outside. It started after I drove to work and pulled into the lot. Nothing out of sorts.

Started and drove home, no problem. My commute is about 6 miles, it gets to full running temp. The noise isn't there on start up. Seems to only come after it has warmed. It will also go away on its own.

I caught it making the noise at home and took a careful listen. It is coming from the rear of the engine, passenger side, probably near the exhaust manifold. Tomorrow I will run compression test and inspect the plugs and top of the piston(s). Not sure what else to do.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I currently have two other Rovers.... but I just sold the Disco that never gave me any problems for like 5 years. The 110 is pulled apart down to the frame. And the Series is in the garage.... also with a mysterious knocking in the engine.... I was hoping this truck would get me through the next few months till the 110 is back up and running.

Noise/tick after warmup= could be catalytic clogged up.

I think you should cut 'em and gut 'em.

Might be exhaust gaskets leaking somewhere though.

Yeah, but I used a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise to the engine.

Couldn't do without the cats anyway, have to have them to get registered here.... Even when I took the ROW 110 in for registration, they made me put one on it, and then they tested it as a 1988 Range Rover. I tried to explain... they didn't get it....

Typical nanny state.... smh

Try the stethoscope to narrow it down.

Tried, but it didn't show itself today. Drove for long enough to get it warm, low range, in the back yard up and down hills and along side angles. No odd sounds.

RB,

Had a '93 LWB with a 4.2.

Driving back from PEI, Canada to Pittsburgh, PA during an extended period at highway speed, a knock started.

Rangie had about 85k on the engine.

Made it back to PA and the knock was diagnosed as from a slipped liner.

Hopefully this isn't the case for you, yet, wanted to throw that out for you.

The ticking noise I was getting on and off certainly is not the cats. I have checked and rechecked the cats in whatever ways I can think.

Yesterday the 4.2 had a hard time starting cold, then today the same thing, but today the oil pressure light stayed on for a good 30 seconds, and the tick was heard right off the bat. Usually it doesn't show up till the car warms up, then only here and there.

I had to go do some errands, and I think it is not running as it should, lower power, low idle, rough idle; and when I start it warm, it revs and stays at 2000 rpm for 30-40 seconds.

I topped off the oil when I got home. And while running and idling the tick is very easy to hear now. Even in the cab.

I think I have full breakdown. Any thoughts?

Mine did this exact thing this morning, it was in the high 20's. Ive had a noisey lifter and a knock for as long as I care to remember. Mine smooths out when it warms up but the taps and knocks are still there. Just drive the piss out of it and be ready for the inevitable.

sounds bad. Those are all signs of a Failure

Yeaaa. If that were me I'd be draining that oil yesterday and sending it out for analysis. Fill with 0w-40 Rotella T6 and a good oversize filter. Idk if the Mobil M1-301 fits on the 4.2.

Lots of gloom & doomers here.

Change oil/filter using 10w-40 or 10w-50 unless temps below zero. Ensure your cooling system is full and free of air.

Ever get this sorted out?
