So couldn't you make the argument it was 1997 when they pulled the Defender out of the US market and decided not to challenge Jeep with a sport/capable open top suv? They had the vehicle, granted some updates, and the name. I guess in '97 the sales were 87k for Jeep. Have increased somewhat since then.

I was thinking yesterday….I haven’t driven a D1 in about 16 years, not driven one for an extended period for about 19 years since I crashed my ‘96 in Feb 2004. I rebuilt my ‘96 after the crash in ‘04 and barely drove it and sold it in 2008 when I started my business and sold my D1 and BMW 3-series daily driver and bought my 2004 D2. I would love to take a D1 camping for a nice 300 mile trip.

Ha! Everyone knows the demise of Land Rover was when the metal dash on the SIIA became plastic on the SIII!

While I really enjoy driving the D1 the ‘94 RRC LWB is just soooo much more comfortable on long driving trips. Put the right arm rest down, set the cruise control, and just motor!
I'm the opposite. The D1 just fit me, perfectly. I'm not too tall to fit the RRC, but it just doesn't have that same feel. That's what hit me when I drove the Grenadier - I felt 100% transported back to my '96 Disco. It's all good though, the RRC will fetch a good price ;)

LR sold 59.5k units in the US last year. Jeep sold 181.5k Wranglers. If LR would have been able to capture a third of the market it would be.... ready for it... 60k. They would equal their total sales across all models with one. JLR sold like 450k vehicals world wide last year. I'm not so into this I'm going to try to look into LR units sold, but based on that I'd say there were close to as many Wranglers sold in the US as all models of LR sold world wide.

One of the chief reasons I test drove a Tundra Turd Pro last week because I was dreaming of 437 hp and 583 ft/lbs and 19 mpg on 87 octane with a 32-gallon fuel tank. I am so sick of being on a first-name basis with the Costco gas attendants because I'm there every few days putting $100 in my LR4 and returning 4 or 5 days and 250 miles later to do it again.
