Leaking Head Gasket!!!

On our 97 Disco, due to leaking head gasket we lost water and overheated badly. We bought a 52k mile engine from a salvage yard and are going to install it.

Deos anyone have any advice about doing a head gasket kit before we install the new engine?

The engine is out of the car and easy to work on. We know enough about cars to have taken out the damagedengine in 20 hours.

Will we be good enough to do a head gasket job or should we leave that to the professionals?

I also understant that the new head gaskets and bolts have improved, is that true?

Thanks in advance.

Its really not a difficult job, especially if you have the engine out. Most of the work involved is taking all the ancillaries off and on. I also found replacing the intake to be a bit of a pain, I had to climb inside the engine compartment to do it. But again, you have the engine out, so that's not a big deal.

Why do you want to replace the head gaskets on your new engine?

First off, don't brag about 20 hours to remove an engine from a Disco. Book time is 15 hours or thereabouts to do the entire swap.

Why are you even considering doing a head job on a boneyard engine? You will almost certainly destroy any warranty the boneyard gave you when you pull the heads off.

If you insist on doing the head job, have the heads resurfaced and the valves ground. consider new exhaust valves.

Replace the head bolts.

Don't ever overheat a Rover engine.

Even Shopboy can do an intake in less than four hours (insert flipoff)
