Looked at a 4Runner yesterday, and I have a question

Most of those are current or recent production.

The only reason anyone would buy a Cadillac or Lexus is because they're a fucking moron who wants to pay more for an uglier version of a decent vehicle.

You sure about this? My GX460 is every bit the Truck my D2 was.

The top one isn't a Lexus anymore. The bottom is somehow even uglier.

99% of steel bumpers look completely out of place on modern vehicles. You can't blend satin-black welded flat steel with formed glossy body panels without it looking like shit. ARB is one of very few companies making a decent effort.

You're crazy. With all the moderns out there (including LR) Lexus is one of the only ones still doing it right, well Lexus and Toyota. With your thinking you'll just have to join the Offroad Classics forum. Have fun with the Grandpa's :)

JK, Grandpa's are cool.

this guy still has the stock side bars and pizza cutters on there.

I listed several at the top that looked fine.

SUVs have either gone pussy or ugly, and sometimes both. The pussy route usually also involves sacrifices in utility. Neither are acceptable.

What are they doing right? Posturing? Intimidating pedestrians? Seeing how far headlights can stick out?

What does your Land Cruiser Prado video have to do with hideous Lexus or 4Runners? I already listed the full size Land Cruiser as acceptable (except the stupid headlights).

Predator! Now that's funny. My GX is like the photos I posted, I didn't like that facelift either. We're in agreeance on that one. The photo you posted is the facelift and ugly. They are very different, you notice that?

See this Land Cruiser? It may be a fat pig (like the LR4), but at least its respectable in this climate of terrible design.

Now look at this Lexus LX 570. Holy shit, what the fuck happened? Its price went up and it got a pinched metal angry fugly face and squinty hateful laser eyes, aka it got restyled for the Chinese market. So the ideal customer is Chinese or a rich tasteless idiot.

Oh, OP go with the Land Cruiser or 460, 470 or 570. The Lexus build quality is MUCH better, and that's saying something because Toyota is great.

Before you say $$ I would buy a used 460 with 100K on the clock than a new 4runner and save a little. Much more room in the 460 compared to the 4runner as well. The 460 is actually based off the Land Cruiser Prado that I posted in the video earlier. Not sold in the US. The Prado is actually a small version of the Land Cruiser. Funny thing is you can interchange parts sometimes when shopping online.

I told you I agree. I don't like the post face lift. This happened on the 2012 for the 460's. Good news, Lexus has been doing it for awhile now, which means it's due for another redesign, thank god. There is no liquid cooled engine in the world that needs that grill.

Got it, that's why I listed the previous gen 4Runner in the "ok" section.

At some point, I'll want to head south again. I'm not worried about the durability of Toyota vehicles, though I wonder how that sliding rear glass would handle washboards... It's still nice enough as a feature to enjoy until the regulator breaks, though.

Kennith

The regulator won't break. I had 250+K on my 2001 4runner with the original regulator. I can't tell you how many times I put the rear window and up and down. Simply put, Toyota knows what the fuck they are doing.

I'm going to check out the Tacoma this week as well. I've no intention of "replacing" the Rover.

That doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to have a vehicle with aftermarket support like a candy store, though. You can very easily and cheaply build whatever you want, and actually manage to sell the parts locally when you try something new.

With Rovers, unless you're a fabrication hobbyist, you're pretty much stuck with whatever a few people feel like making that year, if they can be bothered at all. I'm not really all that cool with this aspect of the owner experience.

Never have been. It's boring.

Something on this side of the fence can be assembled into a different kind of vehicle than my Rover in the time and space I actually have to spare for such entertaining nonsense. Doesn't even mean I'm going to buy a truck or SUV, though. Now that it's time to actually start seriously making a decision...

Well, I've found that the market just isn't really super exciting at the moment, and several manufacturers are pretty close to refreshing models and revealing anticipated projects.

I'm not buying anything tomorrow, or even next month. It's going to be at least toward the end of the year. From this point forward I'll actually be scoping things out. Right now, it's testing ease of use and climate control. Anything that doesn't pass go there is right out the window.

Shame about that Golf GTI... It just couldn't keep up in the heat. I'm fucking tired of sweating my balls off in a first-world nation when driving. It's stupid, and I'm not going to do it anymore. :banghead:

Cheers,

Kennith

Put me in the hat for the Tacoma fan boys, too. There's a mod for everything on these trucks and they are ultra reliable

Resale value is unparalleled. I paid $17k for a 12 year old truck (and it was a smoking deal)

That's a whole different world.

I've driven many Land Cruisers from many eras, but my stick-time in recent US models doesn't reach a single day. I don't know the first thing about them beyond the fact that they're good vehicles.

It's kind of approaching a "replacement purchase" rather than a lifestyle augmentation, though.

Even so, they aren't out of the running; but as noted, I have no idea what the hell I'm going to get.

I've driven both now and I will say this. With Lexus it just seems more refined. Not as tinny when you close a door, they have some weight behind them. Makes sense because the next biggest difference is the road noise. Lexus goes to great length to sound proof everything and you could hear a mouse pissing on cotton inside at highway speeds. Other than that (you have the stereo, Electronics, air conditioned seats and so on) they are both high build quality and I'd drive either any day of the week. You can buy what's called a BASE 460. This omits auto cruise control and premium sounds systems airbag suspension, I wouldn't fool with any of that crap. Seems like more stuff to break, the P38 stories stuck with me.

This? I'm sure it's great in many ways, but is it just me or does it look a bit girly? Reminds me of my wife's old RAV4 and all the Highlanders the grandma's drive around here.

Drove a few of these recently. Impressed on all fronts but price. Looked better in person to me. Might pick one up if the new Defender, Bronco, etc are disappointments. Nice to have both "clean" and "dirty" cargo areas.
