Hi all!
After a 5 year absence, I think I am ready for more Disco pain. So here's my situation and tell me what you think:
I used to have a 95 Disco that got totalled because someone who was not attentive t-boned me and totalled it. After I lost it, I was devastated. I bought a Honda, a Toyota and a Lexus. But every time I passed a Disco, my heart would jump and wish.
That being said, I am now looking at buying a boat and want a towing vehicle for it. The normal towing distance would be less than 5 miles each way. The boat weighs 4000 lbs. Based on what I have read, a Disco can pull 5500 lbs.
The Disco I am looking at is a 98 with 135K miles on it. Questions for the group:
1. What all should I look for in the vehicle before making a purchase? I am not sure if the dealer would let me take it out to the shop for a pre-purchase inspection.
2. Is a 98 Disco a worthwhile towing vehicle? The biggest tow would be around 50 miles the first time I bring the boat home. From then on it is under 5 miles each way.

Check the truck for any major leaks, and ask for previous service records. I'd also ask if you could take it to another LR mech for a lookover before buying. You should be fine towing in short distances.

I towed another disco on a 20' trailer with my 98 a few times. You should be fine, just don't expect to go fast. ever.

You may want to continue searching for just the right vehicle for your towing needs, which might be a Disco II. I have an 04 HSE with the rear air shocks, which in my case helps with leveling the load greatly. I don't have any experience with a Disco I or a non-air shocked disco. I pull about 4000-4500 lbs, and ZERO problems. I think the aceleration is fine towing this load.
