I was at the dealer on Friday to see the LR3. I'm not too impressed. It seems to look like a boxy glorified Ford Explorer. The worst was the Ford style round vents on the ceiling for the rear passengers...just horrible. I could go on, buy why?

The only mod you'll be able to do with the 4.4 is mud terrains, winch.
the 4.0 (reportedly the explorer not jag engine - WHY?) will come with coil springs..... bet that is the version that the Mall off road crowd will migrate to.

LR3 is more capable, structurally stronger, quieter, more powerfull, more spacious... etc...
than its predecessors, in factory configuration.

Do you work for LR? :)

It might be all of those, but it sure is a hell of a lot uglier also!

define capable... Is it better in all regards such as ground clearance, approach and departure, tip angles, climbing, descending, water resistance (more blingie electronics to fail)? It 'limp' mode does it even have more than one wheel drive if something goes wrong? can you drop a driveshaft and bring it home if a diff grenades?

With the exception of "Fording" ability, which I refuse to believe can be anything but marginal (yes, even taking all the drains and fancy plumbing into consideration...) the answer to your question is yes - I'll desmiss the "cliche" statement about the blingie electronics, as I suspect you're only repeating what others have been stating since the inception of electronic engine management long ago.

see for yourself, http://apps.us.landrover.com/future/downloads/specs/lr3_specs.pdf

drive one, you just might like it !

it is a very impressive vehicle. in my experience with it off-road it did more than i thought it would, but it was a relatively controlled environment done on a trail that was scouted and groomed for the truck. they were also spotted thru the trail by some of the most well known Camel vets out there. But.. thats really not was this truck was designed for. its not meant to be a "better D1". its an entirely different vehicle. so much so that they could have sold LR3 and Series 2 disco side by side and done well. On road its unreal.. like no other rover, including range. I guess what im trying to say is view it with an open mind, which is tough, i realize especially when your a no tech is better tech guy, like myself. I have 8 solid axles in my driveway.. i know where you are comin from. but for what it is, it is an impressive performer, even if that performance will only be realized by those using it as a minivan. the downside to the truck is that in 5-10 years when they will be decently priced to use as a trail rig there will nothing that you can do to modify it. on a side note... there is a pretty solid frame under there already..

So , a darby can snap off one of the CVs no problemo with no low range. Hmmm , I am wondering how fast you can do it with some nice torque multiplication.. I am sure your spotters will hear the snapping... Perhaps the Computer is smart enough to fix it afterwards...
