it's not the caliper it's the rotor! v8 in US has larger brake rotors than v6 so only 18" will fit

Ordered a used 18" BMW rim to test fit. Their 18" is far cheaper used/refinished than the LR version.
it's also quite possible the bmw wheel is not built as strong seeing as it was made for a much lighter vehicle more concerned with quick performance than strength.

i'm amazed at how people who buy $50,000+ vehicles then penny-pinch the small stuff.

also, i cannot tell you how many times i have seen photos of cracked bmw factory wheels. it's happened on a car I had and i've seen so many photos of owners on the bmw forums with cracked wheels.

how many cracked lr wheels have you seen? i have not read about any that weren't due to abuse off road and even then not many.

take your chances but a few bucks saved is a silly idea to me.

It's pretty easy to find a set of used 18" LR3 rims online. I've bought quite a few sets.

iirc 17" will fit a LR3 (v8), but not a LR4. rotors are larger (lr4 uses 06-09 rrs supercharged rotors). edit, i might be thinking 18"

BMW x5 wheel is plenty strong. they are not light trucks either. the busted ones were typically the low pro car wheels after hitting curbs.even then I rarely saw any that were actually broken.

We've got Firestone Destination AT's on the stock LR3. A little over a year on them and ~12,000 miles on so far. Been great tires in all sorts of weather/road conditions. Wife has to get to work whether the roads are plowed or not and they have been great. Trips to thru the ADK's, mild off-roading in VA, mud, slick wet grass, snow... and they are wearing well from highway miles.

Time to resurrect the thread... Now I have a sudden interest in that - '10 LR4 came with 19" wheels and 255/55 Continentals that I found to be much prone to hydroplaning in moderate rain than I'd care for. The truck only has 17kmi on it, so the tires are not worn out at all; I might get a set of 18" wheels with something like 265/65 on them.
So - which wheels fit? D2/P38 18"?

The center bores on D2/P38 wheels won't clear the hub ring(?) (hub pilot? I really don't know what it's called). I tried fitting my old 18s from the D2 and wound up selling them. Still looking for another set of 18s for the LR3.

Resurrecting this thread for 2015 and my first-ever post in the LR4 section. My 2013 LR4 has--I think--19" wheels with some crap Continentals that are wearing down even though my truck has less than 10,000 miles. I don't trust these tires on anything more than pavement and if it snows, they're shitty on that, too.

I need some new rubber. I don't need anything extreme, just a high-quality tire with decent pavement manners that I can take on dirt roads every now and then without worry. I also want to keep the same height tire so my speedometer doesn't get fucked up. What are my options?

I'm not sure about more aggressive tires, but the Continental is the best tire they came with IMO. What kind of wear pattern are you seeing? They are very sensitive to alignment and tire balance, but when aligned properly they will last a long time.

I got introduced to a new brand of tire a couple years ago and they seem to be a good tire . Nokian is the name of the company . There Swedish like Volvo . They make them in a 19 " for the LR3 and 4 . 19" is a crazy size , really limits your choices.

FWIW -

after I had a puncture at the very edge of the sidewall in one of the factory Contis (and what a POS that tire is!), I replaced them with 255/60R19 Goodyear Wrangler AT2s. The tires are awesome - round, quiet, with excellent grip on dirt and snow, taller slightly than stock (just enough that you no longer freak over creaming a rim at a pothole or rough curb), and they don't rub anywhere.

I could not be happier with that tire.

I disagree emphatically.

I bought the truck with 17 thousand miles on the clock, the tires were at their last legs - and very uniformly worn out. Normally the worn-out tires are quieter than new - not the case with the Contis.

I run general grabber at2's on my lr3. I have L8 lift rods so I run 265/65/18 and I could not be more impressesd with this tire. Erik from L8 is running the same size on his lr3 and suggested them to me. They are quiet on the road, handle well in rain and snow and have been great off road in mud and on rocks.

That sounds about right. These Contis are absolutely awful in the snow and mud and the tread depth was very thin--not surprising for a factory tire, they skimp where they can.

Is there a way to reprogram the speedo for the taller AT2s?

Nokians might be an option. We bought some Hakkapeliittas for my wife's old Lexus and she loved them.

I saw no need to reprogram anything. The difference in tire diameter is about 3%.

The pickings in 255/55R19 are very slim. There's a Cooper Zeon LTZ; also, for a while Duratracs were available in this size - but not in the U.S.
