I get the feeling some of you guys might be confusing the ford V6 put in some early LR3s with the Supercharged V6 in the LR4. Big difference in the 2 engines. I really have no problem with the supercharged V6 and have not seen one fail yet. Kind of have to agree that the jump in fuel economy wasn't good enough to sell it to the public.

If the next gen LR/Jag Ingenium engine variants make it to this market I would rather have one of those in diesel form in the LR4/Discovery or Range Rover. Depending on what replaces the Defender that might be something to consider as well.

It's going to make it to market. Too much has been invested and the need for Land Rover to have it's own engines and not buy them from someone else is too great.

Drove the LR4 with the supercharged V6 yesterday, noticeably different than the V8 I drove but still felt peppier than the LR3.

I use the LR3 to tow my boat and any other heavy hauling I do. If we decide to pull the trigger on a LR4 I think we will look for a low mileage V8.

V6 is the way of the future.

I say that tongue-n-cheek, so no one take that the wrong way.

The V6's are cranking out some huge numbers these days. I would buy an EchoBoost F-150 without hesitation if I were in the market for one. Great truck with great power. A lot of your higher end car/trucks/SUV's are coming out with a V6 option. A 300HP V6 is nothing these days. Although a V8 may gain a bit more power/torque, does it really matter in your daily driver?

I would not hesitate to buy a V6 if it fits your needs as long as it's a reputable engine.

The new Ford GT's have that V6. Nothing short of badass. 600+ HP

And to think going from 180HP with the D1, to 215HP with the DII 4.6 was a big deal.

It's still 340HP. That's a lot of HP. Do most people need 340HP? Probably not. It that really a downgrade? I don't really think so, personally. What if Range Rover took away the supercharger option. Would that be a downgrade? Do you really need 500HP?

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you on preference. I would rather have a V8. I would rather have a supercharger. I'd actually be interested in getting even more HP out of my supercharged engine. But I don't think these new motors are a downgrade (unless they turn out to be a pile of shit). They are just the engines available for this model year.

Whats the speculation, though? Only one engine option? That's bullshit. They retooling for a new motor option?

I'd still rather have a V6 LR4 over a V8 LR3. I wasn't saying its bad, it just feels heavier to drive than a V8. If you're moving from a V8 LR3 to a V6 LR4, it will be an upgrade.

FYI, the V6 is basically the same engine with the back two cylinders cut off.

you're saying the ecoboost v6 is derived from the ajv8 engine family?

I don't know what the ford ecoboost is built like or from. The supercharged V6 in the LR4 is the 5.0 with 2 Pistons missing. Literally, just the Pistons. Strang looking thing but it works. Been described as the V8 block with two bathtub stoppers in the last 2 holes.

So kind of like a permanent Hemi? What should we call it? Three-quartery doesn't have the same kind of macho ring to it.

And I don't pay much attention to Ford

They've dropped a turbocharged four cylinder and full independent suspension into the Mustang, you can get an all wheel drive Focus that will hit 60mph in near 4.5 seconds, they've introduced a 1.0 liter, 3-cylinder engine that's actually pretty damned fun, and the GT has been brought back AGAIN, hearkening this time to the GT90 prototype in style (and likely price)...

All in a relatively short period of time.

How the hell can you not stare in amazement? They've stopped just short of putting the fucking Nucleon into production.

Cheers,

Kennith

The lr4 scv6 IS the v8 block with the back two cylinders not installed. Obviously different crank ect... It has foam plugs in the holes and a plate over it. The later ones just didn't have the cylinder hole bored all the way through.

It's worse than that. LR now makes zero vehicles that ship with nor can utilize appropriate off road tires without aftermarket mods. To be more precise, there is no tire of suitable load range or sidewall thickness for true off-road use that will fit any current LR product in stock form.

But, but, but......these are premier off-road vehicles! My equine vet has BFG ATs on her Subaru. Off Road - I will put her car up against a Range Rover Sport any day. :)

Everyone I know that has one thinks they were sold a lie. My boss says his gets worse MPG and doesn't tow as well as the 10 year old Titan the he traded in.

My good friend in town that has a construction company uses one as his commuter. He tows with his bigger diesels, but only averages about 17mpg running from town to Andrews, Bragg, etc. He has the 4:10 rear, so that's not helping things.

I don't know what an ecoboost is. I've heard from Ford technicians that the 5.0 looks just like a Mustang 5.0, but that means nothing to me.

I've never seen or heard that, do you have a pic of that somewhere?

It is the Mustang engine but they had some different problems than we have had. I heard they burned oil for a little while, don't know what that was all about. As far as wha Kyle said about the Supercharged V6....Yep.
