WOW I see the myth was true from the mythbusters point of veiw and ours.....I think what saved him the most was that the tire caught the bottom of the van first and then "slapping" the windshield

and the windshield is laminated, where the MB test window was a side window (tempered, but not laminated).

I think the damage to the windshield actually was increased by impacting the bumper first whipping the tire down into the windshield.

Its cool though. Dont see that everyday for sure.

The Lou!
When I worked at Ryder many years ago, we had a driver that died when another trucks tire came off and went through his windshield. But this guy is one lucky bastard!

I had a truck lug nut go through the front window center and hit the upper rear set of a 65 mustang... I had some glass cuts and soiled shorts...

I wonder if he was using the steering wheel for leverage while he was dropping a duce in his pants?

Had a trailer tire explode right next to me.... It was a hot summer's day and I was cruising the interstate in the 88" with the door tops off. Since I'm in the Rover, semis were passing me. Just a tad ahead of the driver's door, a tire on the rear of the trailer grenades....shrapnel and shreds go everywhere and a few chunks ended up in my lap. Trucker doesn't even notice/slow down. I, on the other hand, had to pull over....

Was the mythbusters episode using a car driver or a motorcycle driver?

They did both. Exploding tire next to a motorcycle rider. Couldn't get an explosion big enough to do anything to buster. then they fed a road gator through a mechanism designed to propel the tread through a car's side window. Decapitated their Ballistic Gel dummy.

This might be near the top of the list of "Why you shouldn't tailgate....so you can see and get out of the way of the flying debris ahead." The guy is one lucky sob.

If you look close at the interior picture you can see where the tire hit the steering wheel and bent it downwards at the top, and one of the belts in the tire actually ripped a large hole in the front of his sweat shirt but never hit his skin  , he was very lucky.
