Apparently my rover is pissed at me. I wanted to show some tlc and change the brake pads before they get to bad, but my @#$%ing lugnuts arent going to cooperate. I don't have the factory lug wrench but have tried the 1 1/16 socket and it seems that one only fits the spare. I cut away the flimsy cover on one lug only to find the real lug underneath is wasted as well. Any experienced enough to shedd some light or am I just going to have to take it in the oak hole?

Sounds like some shop used an impact wrench on them.
You can get lug nuts for Defenders from AB without the caps, and they look almost like the genuine lugnuts that come with the alloy wheels.

RRC lugs fit D1 and are solid, no caps.

I usually keep a 1 and 1/16 in the glove box and tell people doing tires that if they do not use it they can replace my lug nuts for $250 no problem. But I have my tires done by people I know.

My dealer thought I was kidding when I told them I couldn't get off the lugnuts (always serviced there). I then showed them my stock wrench, twisted and mangled. Got three tough guys from service dept with a 4 foot breaker bar, they couldn't break any of them loose. They had to use their super duper impact wrench to get them off. I still have my old wrench, amazing how weak it is.

arent our lug nuts 27mm in disco2. I have used a 27mm deep socket and a breaker bar and had no troubles with my steel wheel lug nuts or the alloy lug nuts. I dont know if they are cheaper or not but rumor has itthat the bmw x5 uses the same size pitch and thread lug nut as D2s.

A 1 1/16 socket is about the same size as 27mm, it works fine. X5's have wheel bolts.

that about is where the issue comes in. 1/2 inch is about the same size as 9/16 but you dont want to use 9/16 for a 1/2 bolt do you. Discount tire tore up all but 3 of my lug nuts using a 1 1/16 socket on my disco and had to replace them at $15.47 each. I have had no further issues since i bought a 27 mm socket and hand it to them when i take it in.

Loyd, your analogy is not very good. Let's do the math:

1/2" = 0.5000"
9/16" = 0.5625"
difference = 1/16" = 0.0625" almost 63 mils (1 mil = 1 thousandths of an inch)

1 1/16" = 1.0625"
27mm = 1.06299"
difference = 0.00049" < 1/2 mil

That's about a 1/2 thousandths of an inch difference between 27 mm and 1 1/16" compared with 63 thousandths difference for the 1/2" to 9/16", or a discrepancy in the earlier analogy of over two orders of magnitude. I'm no expert on tool making, but there's probably more than a one thousandths difference between sockets sized 1 1/16" made by different manufactures and even between those made by the same manufacturer, not Snap-On of course ;). Additionally, the 1 1/16" is actually smaller than the 27 mm. The only reason not to use the 1 1/16" would be if it did not fit over a swelled cap. The idiots at Discount Tire likely used a 1 1/8" socket and went crazy with their impact wrench. Capped lug nuts are generally junk ... Brian has the right idea.

I used a breaker bar and a 5ft galvanized steel pipe placed over the breaker bar to get enough leverage!
