have a 95 3.9 disco w 130000 mi. a few months ago i started getting a bit of a tick at start up after sitting overnight. it would be fine during the day running around but come the next morning it would tick for a few seconds until the oil got to everything. now if i rev it up in neutral as it comes down i get a little rattle sound from the sump area. what i wanted to see was if this is the liner slip issue i've heard of or just (just!!!) weak oil pump bearing failure da da da.... and if that's the issue what is a good deal on a short block any good experiences ? look forward to hearing from the brain trust!

thanks.

I just replaced my 3.9L cause when I got it I was told it had Moblie 1 in it since it was new. Changed the oil and after I drove it or let it run for 45min I would get the same tick from the sump area. The Moblie 1 loosened what ever slugge was in the engine and it probally sucked some up in the oil pick up and cause me to score a bearing.

I got a good deal on a 3.9L for 1000 dollars with 90k on it. I got all the whole motor , sensors, bolt-on stuff, all the tins.

so look to spend any where from 1000 to 500 on a engine

piston wrist pins cause a rapping sound when revving up and down quickly also do not discount worn connecting rod bearings, main bearings make a thud sound under load.....

also remove the oil pan and check for pieces of broken piston skirts.......

Might want to check the cats and check for an exhaust leak ???

x2 -I once had what sounded like a bolt in one of the cylinders. Took off valve covers, took off sump- all tolerances seemed good, all surfaces looked nice. Everything felt tight. It was only when I stuck my head between the cat on the passenger side and the engine while it was running (trying to pinpoint where in the engine the noise was coming from) that I found it was the cat, not the engine. I was on the verge of swapping the lump! Sure would have been disapointed to have done all that and had the noise still there.

Not to say it is your cats, but rule it out before doing a lot of work.

I had the same thing with my 1999 Series1, it was the cats. Rev it up and back pressures holds the loose cat mat'l from rattling. When it idles, the loose mat'l rattles like a knocking engine.
I checked mine by drilling a small hole in the cat, then take the drill bit out of the drill and insure the bit back in, if you can feel the inside mat'l moving, that is the source of the noise. Plug hole with a screw when done.
