What if any mechanical gauges are you using in your trucks. What do the do(type), who makes it? You got pics? Lets see them. I wish I could, but my D1 is getting a new engine and is to far away to take any pics.

I haven't yet installed one, but I would like to add a mechanical Oil Pressure Guage to my 99D2. I hate to rely on an idiot light for such an important part of an engine. I would suggest you check out Autometer guages. They are available at most hot-rod shops and websites like Summit.

I's like oil pressure and temperature since the temp gauge on the D2 won't alert you to anything until it's probably too late.

I don't have any in the Rover, but I used VDO gauges in the VWs for oil pressure, temp and head temp.
Never had a problem with the VDO, unlike my friends with their AutoZone Special gauges.

I added oil, temp, and trans temp to mine. Electric though, not a fan of mechanical.

Autometer z series in a kustom generic 3 gauge pod.

No space to host pics or I'd show you

Where did you tap in for each sender?

I've got one of those dual A-pillar pods. It's got a clock and an A/F meter for a little light show. The chicks dig it.

Nah, I don't have any yet, but I plan on doing at least an oil pressure gauge. BTW, I think the design of the VDO gauges would match the factory cluster the best. They're also pretty sturdy. I had the same set of mechanical VDOs in my old Buick for nearly 10 years.

Yes, That is the setup I currently have.

Where did you buy them from? And do they come with the sender units? Also, the part number if you still have it.

Thanks

Yes, but not for a day or so.

I don't have a digital camera here at home and I am replacing my next door neighbor's water pump.

If he has one, I may be able to post it up tomorrow or Sunday.

BTW: This was not my design on the oil pressure setup. Jimjet was the one who did it first and sent me most of what I needed (fittings and hose wise).

Here is a link to his post.

That should give you a good idea of what I did for oil pressure.

When I get the camera, I could show more.

As I wrote in the other post, the water temp sender is tapped into the water neck coming out of the intake manifold.

Both sender units and both gauges came from summit.com. They were sold separately.

They have to be matched (range) as close as possible.

I can get part numbers later, but my neighbor is standing right behind me with beer and a water pump.

Godda Go!

Peace,

Dan

Thanks, Dan. I will wait for the part numbers. I like the setup.

I have a triple pod in the center of my dash that houses water temp, oil pres, and a trans temp gauge (sensor not hooked up yet on this one). All are digital from Cyberdyne, www.cyberdynegauges.net, green displays to match the stock instrument lights. Being able to monitor the exact numbers at a glance is very helpful. Especially after seeing how big a range the stock water temp gauge will sit in the middle. It became a real necessity after getting rid of the viscous fan during my 4.0 to 4.6 swap.
I've used analog mechanical gauges in the past and I've found these digital ones to be more helpful. You can also set them to flash or scroll warnings when customizable threshholds are reached to catch your attention.

Can you please post a picture of your guages installed in your Discovery.

Thanks

Personally I prefer mechanical analog guages. I've found also that the easiest to monitor are guages that have a normal operating range that have the needle at 12 o'clock (or 3, depending on the design). That way at a glance I can see if everything is normal. It takes a less than 1 second glance at the guages to see things are normal (less time my eyes are off the road/trail). I don't have to think about which guage I'm looking at and what the number (if it were digital) means.
That's my personal prefrence though, I know others like digital.

I have a mechanical water temp gauge and electrical oil pressure and water temp gauges to go into a new isntrument panel I've been working on for a coupla years.

I prefer the mechanicals, but I'm not ognna go to that trouble in the Disco and will accepthte limitations of electrical gauges in exchange for ease of install.

I found my autometer gauge son ebay. They won't amtch, but I did find a 0-60 psi oil pressure gauge and was elated at finding one with that range. I'd like to add tranny temp, but am not sure what to do next as I'm still looking for a Defender tach and need to figure out a speedo (might go GPS for speedo).

Here is a picture of my gauges.
I have secured the pod by sending bolts through the vent behind the radio, with a bit of locktite.
Eventually I am going to put a wood moulding around the outer corners to neaten it up a bit. If I were to do it again I'd go with a solid black or beige pod, but I got this particular one super cheap.
