Heading out on road trip from PA to Montana. Would like to visit as many microbreweries on way west as possible to sample local brews. Hoping for suggestions from any of the locals along the way. I live in an area where Victory and Dogfish Head are within driving distance so I am a bit spoiled. I'm thinking I will pass through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Thanks for any suggestions. Also, any "don't miss" spots in Montana?

Goose Island Brewery

It's an oldie, but a goodie.

Sadly, the vast majority of there beer is brewed not onsite, but under contract. Unless things have changed, they weren't even able to mill the grain on-site at the brewpub due t zoning regulations.

I got my Seibel yeast cultures from a brewer friend at Goose Island. What a pretty brewery, even if it only gets used for short-run brews.

Mad Anthony Brewing in Fort Wayne is OK. Broad Ripple Brewing in Indianapolis is much nicer.

If you are thinking about taking the pa/oh turnpike, cut north at toledo and take I-94 through michigan and hit Bells in Kalamazoo, MI and follow 94 to the chicagoland area. It gets you off the godforsaken oh turnpike and indiana tollroad and bells is worth the diversion....try the Oberon.

Don't know where your destination in Montana is, but if you get as far west as Whitefish, you've got to check out the Great Northern Brewing Co. right 'downtown'.... Good food and the pub room overlooks the brewery floor. Even better, the first two glasses are free....

If you are going through South Dakota, the Fire House in Rapid City is good. I recommend the Smoke Jumper.
