Mk III hose bled out

Driving my son to school the top hose on my MkIII blew off. The factory clamp where the rubber hose meets the plastic connector on the engine gave out and the hose slipped off spewing coolant all over the engine. Fortunately I caught it immediately from the steam biillowing out from under the hood due to cold weather. I caught it so quickly that the temp gauge did not even budge and a nice guy gave me a hose clamp and a jug of water to put the hose back on. It took five minutes. Guess I needed a coolant flush after all.

So the moral of the story is check your hoses. If I had been driving on the interstate in the dark it could have been a whole different ending to the story.

check the coolant tank for fatigue and cracks too. we would replace the hoses and tank at the same time, between 60k and 80k miles.

The expansion tank is good, I am going to replace the hoses ASAP even though they were done not that long ago.

Make sure you drain it at the block as well before adding any other coolant

chrisstlouis report to this thread....

G48 is NAP
Long life (orange) is NAPS
It is rumoerd on BMW forums that as long as you remove the g48 completely, you can run the OAT orange stuff with no issues. they dont mix well and can cause issues.

also, volvo and saab might use G48, so you might see if GM or subaru has a p/n also.

If BMW recommends silicated fluid, stick to it and make sure it gets changed. Whatever happens, do NOT mix silicate and silicate-free coolants. There appears to be a lot of talk in the VW community about VW's G11 to G12 changeover and improper changeovers causing disasterous problems, especially on VR6 motors, which run notoriously hot.

It appears that switching to silicate-free will not cause any problems given the old stuff is completely gone, and the car is never topped off with silicate (i.e. dealer) fluid.

How many miles were on the truck? I don't know if its because of the coolant, but that plastic just sucks and breaks down over time. Have you checked to see if you valley plate is leaking? If you pull the rubber plug on the bottom of the bell housing coolant will usually come out if its leaking.

70k miles, the plastic was not the problem in this case. It was the factory hose clamp that holds the rubber hose to the plastic end. It is not adjustable and it slid off.

It is the environmental freaks in Europe who caused the auto manufacturers to start using shittier plastic, paints, rubber, etc. If they (the Germans in particular) had free run at high grade materials they would put everyone else out of business. Instead though people like you get overpaid to replace parts at dealerships.

they have to "decompose" after a certain length of time. same reason rats like the soy based rubber insulation on wiring....

and, you are way wrong if you think dealership workers are overpaid.... at least around here they aren't paid good at all.

I just replaced the heater core in my rover, yesterday, and used ABA hose clamps. Man, they are well made and don't cut into the hose at all.
