I am going to pull and clean my oil pan this weekend and am wondering about improved oil after I desludge... which brings up two questions
1) Has anyone ever used an engine cleaner in the oil. I was thinking about just before I tear it down, what kind did you use and what kind of results did you get.
2) I'd like to hear about success and failures using synthetic oils and any recomendations.
Thanks
Gordon :)

i use mobil one in my '97 disco. Works really well, never had any problems. If you treat your engine right with oil it'll go for a long time so i treat mine with mobil 1 and often. Royal Purple's suposed to be the best of the best but i'm not going to pay that much for oil.

Cheers

My Ranger had 180,000Km and looking down the filler hole it was crudding up prety bad even after 5000km changes. I started using Valvoline Synth-Blend and the engin seemed to clean itself and there is no more sludge. And in my rover I use the blended oil and things are still spotless.

More important than brand name oil's is to get a quality synth blends or full synth oil, I think (and some will disagree) that in these engines a synth-blend is fine since they are by no means HIGH PREFORMANCE mschines.

My opinion since you asked.

Been running Mobil 1 since I got the vehicle and it comes highly reccomended by the few mechanics I know. Just try to have them fill you out of the bottles, not the drum ( if you have your oil changed at a shop) I have heard of "swapping" and thats bad to go back and forth between syn and regular oil.>JB

I run Mobil 1 and a quart of Rislone engine cleaner to help clean the insides. I have not had any adverse problems and the Disco ruins just great. I will be doing the oil pan thing also and probably run the Rislone every other oil change. :D

According to some test done by some race type guys, Mobil 1 will give you .7 more mpg as well! woo!

I've run Mobil 1 for a long time and all my previous Jeeps have always had a clean pan and run very well for a long time.

i don't think mobile one gives u 7 more MPG. I get about 9-10MPG with mobile one, now if i was running some cheapo brand i don't think i'd be getting 4mpg....at least i really hope not. I'm running a K&N as well. Still 9-10mpg, go figure. I put up with it's drinking problem.

I would almost have to agree with the improved milage claim. I changed over to Mobile 1 recently (following a shortblock replacement) and have noticed a slight improvment in milage. We took a trip to Colorado and for the first time since I've owned the vehicle got > 16mpg. Prior to that we rarely got above 15. Hmmm....... I'm not claiming it's from the oil but simply stating the data.

Syn Blends,

Check to see how much your syn blend actually contains synthetic oil. Your probably better off buying 5 quarts dino and 1 quart syn it should be cheaper and get you much more than any of the syn blends I have seen.

I have used moble 1 for 55k on my 98 disco, & works very well & my engine is spotless! BUT 7500 on an oil change is too many miles! I change mine 3-4000 or 6-8 months. when your filter is dirty your gas milage will suffer! Also your car will seem sluggish. I also use a napa filter 1452. It is larger than stock.
It is the detergent in oil that keeps your engine clean. The vicosity maybe fine but if the detergent is gone then you are prone to sludge. I also use marvel oil if I have been wheelin in water or just to clean the engine. It is a superior water remover. I wil add 50- 100 miles before an oil change.

Well I really got a lot more from this thread than I thought I would. I finished the pan resealing and cleaning. It took me about 1.5 hrs total ( Disco has the easiest pan to remove I've seen it years) and no leaks. I didn't find as much sludge as I thought I would but I've been doing 3k mile oilchanges for about 2 years 70k miles and it probably helped .
I will run synth blend for a time because I'm not sure of the sludge level in the cam area..
I'll report back if anything new takes place
Thanks
