Dear experts of this list,
I have a weird problem with my Discovery I. I have adjusted the front wheel bearings several times now and they keep loosening up on me. I don?t get it... It is not the first time I adjust bearings in various cars including this one and older LRs and I have never experienced a problem like this. I even changed the bearings and seals on both sides but still the same problem. Adjusting the bearings is no problem. I get it tight and everything look fine. After some days the ABS light comes on now and then and when checking the play is there again. Is there anything else that could cause this phenomenon? The car has a fair mileage (280000km) on ithe meter. I will check the swivel pin preload but I suspect that is fine. Other ideas?

Thanks,
Peter

Hmm, pretty odd that they would just come loose like that. A few monhts ago I renewed the wheel bearings on my Disco and it was all pretty straight forward. As long are you torqued the bearing side hub nut to the first high torque setting, then spun everything back and forth several times to seat the bearings well before backing it off the the final light torque setting - they shouldnt get loose. Unless perhaps you didnt bend the lock washer in opposing directions? That will surely allow it to come loose. Make sure you bend a flange of the lock washer over a flat face of the bearing side hub nut, then towards you over a flat face of the the outside hub nut after its been tightened down. That should ensure that everythign stays in place.

Sounds like the same problem I have. Change the washers! I fought with mine for a while, then realized that when after I had the lock washer tabs bent over the outer nut, I could hit the edge of the outer nut with a hammer and screwdriver and the washer would spin a little bit too with the outer nut. That's not supposed to happen.

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately for me I followed all advice/instructions how to adjust the bearings, including the first high torque and bending of lock washers. Also I have used new washers (actually new bearings and seals as well). Could the washers be of bad quality? I mean a poor fit. I think the ones I got came from Bearmach or similar.

Thanks,
Peter

The lock washers are "D" shaped on the inside diameter, in order to prevent rotation of the nuts after torquing.

Did you get the right lock washers?

Gnomes in Sweden might not like beer. I think they prefer stronger drinks like "Absolut" or the "home made" variety...

I adjusted the bearings yesterday using new washers. It?s a bit strange, the old washers were a bit loose, i.e could be moved a mm or two sideways. The new ones were a snug fit. Might explain my problem. I don?t know if the different washers came from the same or different deliverers. I have so much spare parts (recognize that?) lying around so I don?t know which is recent and wich is bought as "good to have" several years ago ( I have owned the truck for 10 years).

Regards,
Peter
