I'm very curious how a fan clutch could result in the fan hitting the shroud.

PT, The fan blades are hitting the lower shroud as I spun it by hand. I didn't want to risk starting it up and having the fan break apart and slice through everything up front.

I got to look at the shroud today after work and realized what the problem was almost immediately (its amazing what day light will do for you). The PO must have had the shroud off at one time and didn't seat it properly in the retaining tabs on the bottom of the radiator. I fixed that and put it all back together and it started up and ran quietly. The best part is, this time it actually took 15 minutes to do. Now all I have to do is replace the fan.

Does anyone know if the fans are the same from a D1 to a D2?

Different fans, but not sure it they will interchange. Also while we are talking about all this fan bitniz. In your original case why not remove the fan and disconnect the electrical connector on the AC compressor and then turn on the AC? This will run your electric fan when the temp goes up and you don't risk disintegrating the rest of the busted fan.

Cheers,

Mike

The fans won't interchange(different viscous). I tried it. You can change the entire viscous assembly w/fan. I have a D1 viscous and D1 blade on my D2. It's all I had laying around when my last D2 viscous was so sloppy it took out my waterpump bearing. Plus the D1 assembly is almost half the price of the D2 new.

Ah I thought you had a D2 - sorry. I think (don't quote me) that I recall the D1 fan turning the opposite direction from the D2? For some reason I think that. I may be VERY wrong.

Doug

Fuck I hope not since I'm running the D1 on my D2. I believe since the fan tightens on the same way to the water pump they turn the same direction.

Viscous will work but fans are different. If you change both then no problem. Key is to use the GM viscous and whatever fan you have laying around. The question was are they the same. They are not.

I was able to pick up a fan from ak rover last night. It was installed in no time and she is running smooth and quiet.

Thanks for all your inputs. You guys rock!

I have don the procedure the fan removal before and it will not cause any problems i the winter
i ran with out it for a bout three months city driving and all like fly said just disconnect the a/c comp switch connectors on the comp. when you engage the ac the auxillary fans will come on take care to seal the connectors if you are doing and mudding or water crossings...thats why i took mmine out to begin with as not sling water into the intake. just keep you eyes on the gauge and kick your ac on whne you see it get half on temp gauge... if remember correctly my temp reached a little below three qauters on the gage and the fans came on automaticly they must have a safety relay or something....
surely some body else knows or has had this happen in one those water crossings where a stick floated in and busted the fan and had to soley rely on the aux fans to make it by
