I am doing a re-ring and bearing job on my 96 4.0L Disco.
I got a new camshaft (AMR) and the lobes seem to be coated with black paint. I hate to sound stupid but should I try to remove this before reassembly? The journals were not coated with anything.
Hooray for aftermarket parts !!!!!

That is Not paint it's a coating for break in also
this is a must with these non roller cam engines is to use oil with
High amount of zink in it like Valvoline racing oil
other wise your cam lobe's will wear right off

black may be oil burnish, or graphite paint to aid in break in I would also coat lobes in assembly lube and use a high moly or zink additive in the oil for break in. Lubro moly for moly or AC Delco for a high zink additive.

I am buying new lifters and don't want to ruin them right off.
Just reluctant to try to clean this off without knowing what I am doing.

Cam break in is a make or break job.
Go get some cam break in lube and coat all lobes and some Chevy EOS in the oil(half the bottle).
Start the engine and keep the RPM at 2000 for 20 minutes
Then 2500 for 5 minutes
Then 3000 rpm for 5 minutes
Then slowly drop down to idle.

Drain the oil.
Add new oil and a few teaspoons of EOS and hope that bitch hardened up. It's a gamble always is.

Good luck

What you're probably seeing is the result of the hardening process. New cams typically have lobes that look dirty at best.

Most new gearsets, cams, etc are hardened and blackened in the manufacturing process. It is extremely hard and you would have to literally use some water paper on it to make any sort of an impression. Leave it and run the new cam in...... oil change will remove the fine balck particles
