Hi all,
Just wanted to introduce myself. I purchased a 2001 Discovery II last week and I'm in the process of getting all the bugs worked out of it. The truck runs and drives nice, but needs a little TLC in the usual areas. I had to replace the throttle body heater plate and the hoses going the the throttle body to stop a coolant leak, the ignition cylinder is sticking, and I have a shudder when getting up to speed, which I assume is drive shaft related. I hope to solve that problem this weekend.
If anyone is in Houston send me a message. It would be great to get to know some other Discovery owners.
I will upload some pics, as soon as I figure out why I keep getting an error. I have re-sized the pics, so the file size should be small enough. I'll have to tackle this issue tonight.

I'd address the front drive shaft soon if that s the issue with the vibration, or you'll be replacing the tranny>
Thanks for reminding me! I've had a tranny locked in the crawl space for a month! I better get him out before he starts to smell.

Thanks for all the feedback. This forum surely is more active than another one I found. I'm not sure if that is good or bad yet. :)
I picked up a couple of ignition switches yesterday and will install one and have a back up for the next time it fails. Has anyone swapped one out before? I assume it can be a DIY project. I'll search the site for info on this before I start.
It appears Discovery owners have a love/hate relationship with their vehicles. I don't mind the maintenance if the driving experience will be worth it when I am done.
As for the drive shaft, do Y'all recommend taking it to a local drive shaft specialist, ordering one from someone like Tom Woods, or is it as simple as replacing the U joints and being done with it?

I plan to replace the u joints on my truck today, although they appear to be fine, since I read that they can fail without warning. I have noticed that some people replace just the u joints and others replace the entire driveshaft. How do I know which option is correct if both appear to be in perfect working order? There is no play at all in any of the u joints.

Unless your truck is lifted, I wouldnt bother buying a new shaft. Just take yours to a driveline shop and have them rebuild and balance it. Make sure to keep up with greasing the new joints every oil change.

My truck is bone stock. I had planned to have a mechanic friend of mine replace the 3 u joints today. Is that not recommended? I work a lot and it will be almost 2 weeks before I could take the driveshaft off and take it to a driveline shop. Do you recommend I just wait? I want to do things the right way. I just have no experience with 4X4's in general and Discoverys specifically.

First off, You need to replace the centerball as well as the 3 u joints.
Second, you want whoever does it to balance after replacement.
Do it right the first time. And dont drive it too much until you get this fixed! It can let go anytime causing severe damage. Search here for the U joint part numbers and centerball kit. You can pick them usually pick them up at NAPA or Autozone.

Thanks for the follow up. I didn't hear from my friend today so I think I will wait until I can take it to a driveline shop like you recommended. I don't see the centerball kits listed so i will ask about that as well.

It won't be without warning. You've been warned here a couple of times.
If you don't maintain the joints, the shaft will grenade, and it will bash a hole in the side of your tranny. Take it from a guy who knows.
