Purchased a new exhaust from atlantic british yesterday and should be receiving it tomorrow. Anyone have any tips or special techniques I should know when I put it on. I have the rave cd and printed all the pages concerning the swap out. I did not have to get new cats it is only from them back.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Paul

At your mom's
The union bolts (behind the 'Y') up under the transfer case region may be rusty. Start now with penetrant.

Have a sawzall, hand grinder, and drill handy.

I seem to remember cutting the old pipe off just behind the junction allowed much better access to the stubborn union bolts.

Have safety goggles on. I also like earplugs.

The rubber isolator/hanger come off much easier if you give the holes a squirt of oil. Likewise, they go on the stud much easier when lubricated.

If you're replacing the whole thing, and the union nuts aren't flakey rusty, in other words still a snug socket fit, I wouldn't worry about penatrant. The studs will just snap if they are too rusted.
I would use it on the pipe to manifold nuts though.

You know that union is a bugger and always seems to leak a little. Has anyone just chopped it out and put a sleeve over both ends?

Cheers,

Mike

I agree... I put a borla cat back on a couple years ago. Everytime I loose a manifold stud and have to readjust them, that union leaks a little and it takes me at least 30 min. to get it sealed back up to where I am happy with it. I never really thought about cutting both ends off and using a sleeve... that makes sense if there is room. It would eliminate the hassle of trying to adjust it all the time.

Yep mine's a Borla too, and although the Borla cat back is the cat's ass, it has always given me trouble there. I may just do it soon. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers,

Mike

Removing the flange is a bad idea if you ever expect to need to get into anything that requires dropping either the exhaust or the Y-pipe.

Mrs. PT took her LWB to a toothless exhaust guy... He cut the flanges off and welded the pipes together. Of course, the truck now needs a transfer case and then, probably an exhaust!

What about a sleeve with clamps?
