I have used a shackle a million times (probably a bit of an exaggerated figure) and each time without fail, but I have seen synthetic winch line (which is essentially what this new shackle is made of) get cut due to sharp edges on rocks, a faulty fairlead, etc.

LOL. I've spent more time than I care to think of in confined spaces with a piece of synthetic rope tied to my back.

I've spent some time hanging off the side of building with a piece of synthetic rope tied to me.

I've spent some time hanging off the side of big rocks with a piece of synthetic rope tied to me.

I don't think chain or wire rope would have been appropriate for many of those applications.

While I AM a fan of wire rope for my winches, I'm fine with this and many other applications for synthetic rope.

As soon as I saw that dangerous piece of equipment get taken out, I had my phone ready to call the county dispatch for a medivac helicopter.

While driving on some back roads in Bolivia towards the end of the day last week we came upon this truck. The entire rear end in a rather large hole with a pretty good slope exiting in our direction. I had brought down a MasterPull kinetic rope and Lucky8 soft shackles with me on the trip. Mainly because I was really trying to keep the weight down in my two bags.

The large truck didn't have the slip in hooks on the front, so we had to improvise a bit and run two soft shackles through the recovery attachment points in the front. On the trip with us was a guy that owns his own rigging equipment business and operated two commercial towing companies. His guess at the total weight of the truck (loaded partially with propane bottles) was 25K lbs. Our recovery vehicle was a Nissan Patrol.

The locals driving the trucks didn't have much faith in what we were setting up, but after some translation they understood what we were asking them to do. It wasn't going to be a slow yank by any means, but I was pretty confident the shackles would hold up. Regardless though we didn't have a choice. This is one of the great things about them - you can weave them through a solid recovery point where no other metal shackle would work.

After one good solid yank and a slight pull the truck was out. We were the gringos with black magic after that.

I can't imagine how that truck made it through the rest of the road. I likely was going to take another day or two to get to the end of the road we had traveled that day.

I also have a GoPro video of the recovery I will upload once I organize everything. Gear Patrol was on the trip with us as well and it will likely have a clip of this on the video they are producing for the trip.

Was this a Top Gear episode?

That's awesome that the patrol freed the much larger truck.

Haha. No. Though I am sure most of us have all seen that episode. Our Gear Patrol video won't be nearly as dramatic or entertaining. We had a Nissan Patrol, Nissan Frontier and two Hiluxes. We drove 1,300 miles in 10 days and 90% on very unimproved dirts roads and much of that sketchy as shit - single lane, sheer drop offs for thousands of feet and bridges like this. I was lead, so I was lucky enough to go first.
