landrovered said:The worst thing is all of these signs create a white noise situation and then we tend to tune all of them out. We have a 2 mile stretch of road in my little town that must have 15 signs per hundred yards. Nobody pays any attention to any of them.
On 59th ave between Greenway and Acoma (a half mile) they decided to put medians and a crosswalk for The Thunderbird Grad school. This road was just wide enough for two lanes each way and a center lane before the construction. So on one side of the road they had 5-6 apartment complexes with 2 entrances each, plus a strip mall, 7-11 and a pizza place. The other side was the grad school. No entrances, but pedestrian traffic. Each break in the median needed a keep left sign (and yellow/black warning sign). The crosswalk got two warning signs on each side of the road. Then they put up always flashing over-road lights with attached sign. Plus 'sponsored by' signs, speed limits, no parking, etc.
So in a 1/2 mile stretch of road, there was over 60 road signs. So much overload that people were getting hit in the crosswalk because no one was paying attention. They finally removed the crosswalk and associated signs. The road keeps getting put up to remove the medians, but lack of money kills it off every year. :banghead:
