I would be hitting the roof and telling the warranty company that they are on the hook.

they need to sign off on the tear down in most cases, if they didnt then the dealer knowing that should be on the hook.

I would be going up stream at the dealer and looking for someone to step up and make this right.

now back to something nobody has touched on.

This was the car I wanted most, that you could get in the US, and I want to keep it forever, so it's been pampered like a baby.

pampering a land rover is a horrible thing and often results in carbon deposits that can stick valves and hang up lifters. Both of these things can cause ticks.

drive it like you stole it on a somewhat regular basis and it will run better.

Oh, I drive it on a regular basis, and take it off road, and long trips, but when it comes to maintenance, it's been pampered. Scraps and dings are just part of being off road, but engine issues just took my by surprise.

That tick-tick-tick you hear is the sound the dealership going out of business, not your engine.

Get your truck back before they make you an unwilling investor in their franchise.

I had a similar problem years ago. I was lazy when my oil light came on in my old porsche 951. I dropped it at the dealer to check the pressure. They decided to tear the motor down and said that I needed a new motor. Needless to say after my attorney got involved and six months it was at a local shop all put back together with a new oil pressure sensor. The dealer wanted 13k for the rebuild and they ended up having to pay for the other mechanic to put it back together and my rental.

i would definitely get it out of there and into an indie shop fo' sho'. Mike asked where you were -- think he was trying to give you some direction on where to go...

As a side note, both of my 01's have a slight tick at idle...my solution is to shrug and mash the go pedal...

FWIW upstatedisco had a tick tick tick at idle too. We used to give him shit on the trail all the time. What it ended up being was a nick in the serp belt so that every revolution on the AC compressor pulley it ticked.

That was the first thing I thought of. The automotive business has crashed after Cash for Clunkers. The only revenue a dealer has is the shop.

Land Rover has lost a fortune since Tata took over. I believe they may have posted a loss of a BILLION dollars in the last year.

I'm afraid we're gonna see dealers all over going under.

Of course, Land Rover corporate's response to this is going after guys like me!

Edit:
OK, it was only $383 million in the last six months ended in September. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/transport/article4819974.ece

This is unfortunate to hear; it sounds, as others have said, the dealer is trying to pay this months rent on your dime.

If the warranty company refuses to pick up the tab for the tear down and repair even after you have documented maintenance history, I think it's time to get a lawyer involved.
