Recently changed high pressure ps line and decided to use ATF as recommended by LR on the refill
instead of ps fluid I've used the past 15 years. The pump is now quite noisy and groans a lot.
Am I missing something? Nothing else was changed.

Do not use ATF.

While the original Texaco fluid may be nearly impossible to purchase in individual bottles, Land Rover offers a comparable fluid through dealerships. Some dealership employees are unaware of this fluid.

It isn't the cheapest fluid you'll ever buy, but you should either use this or another fluid that comes close to matching it. Some higher-end aftermarket fluids will work, but I cannot remember which is which.

I did a lot of research to find other options, but I've managed to lose the file and forget all of it. I'll sort it out again sooner or later.

ATF is not the answer. I have personally experienced it's effects in a number of used Land Rovers, and even accidentally used it in my own DII once. I don't know what the fuck I was thinking when I did that.

Noise began shortly thereafter, and once I realized that I'd made a damned fool mistake, the issue was cured immediately by flushing it all out and filling with appropriate fluid.

Cheers,

Kennith

Why didn't you run atf all along? Says to in the owners book, not just rave
Replace the pump, they don't last forever. 15 years is a good run.

Ignore the d2 owners saying not to, they own goofy trucks

Rave explicitly states to use ATF for 96 models.

Well, I didn't know you had a '96, did I? PAS fluid confusion and noise is generally a DII concern.

It irrelevant, though. Be sure the system is properly free of air, and that you didn't damage the pump by driving with low fluid levels, and then try the fluid you've used in the past.

If it shuts up, you've found an issue.

Cheers,

Kennith

Some of the pumps are whiny, and I found no rhyme or reason to it. If it bothers you, you may follow the Rave P/S air bleeding procedure - somethings it will make the whine go away.
