My home is where my Disco is
Hi there,
for all Disco owners who are unlucky enough to live at the other side of the pond (aka Europe) we are faced each day with coolant-antifreeze cans in which nothing as IAT, OAT or HOAT is written on.

I have downloaded Chris St Louis' excellent coolant chart but... nearly all but Texaco XLC are not available in Europe, or when available, under other name or version.

Besides, the only specifications which appear on the can is (copied from Texaco XLC -Aka Extended life coolant- Havoline pre mixed 50%), which reads:

"Technology approved by Caterpillar, Ford, Volkswagen (G12), Volvo, General Motors (GM6277M) MB325.3, Renault (Type D), DAF 74002, Scania, Man 248/324 SNF.
WTF is that?

Is dex-cool or OAT the same as VW G12 or GM 6277M?
I order to find other alternatives than going to the stealer

Besides, it seems that LR has begun to shift from Texaco to Castrol SF, at least in Europe. And guess what? Castrol SF does not even appear in their website (only Castrol NF, and nothing said about its OAT nature...)

I would be very grateful if any of you could confirm OAT specifications in order to simplify coolant top up and renewal.

LR ownership and maintenance, always so secret...

Best regards and thank you

Robert

VW G12 is good stuff, but it isn't the orange OAT. G12 was developed to replace VW G11 which was crap. In that time frame VW had serious issues with aluminum heads on iron blocks and galvonic corrission. G12 was their answer and was soon after approved for everything that VW makes.

From what I've read, Dex-Cool was a GM idea for long life coolant, but that bit them in the end. Although I do use dex-cool in my LR, I change it every 24 months, actually, i change the coolant in all my cars every 24 months. If you are changing coolant types, you gotta get ALL of the old stuff out.

So the [*]GM 6277M is OAT.
The performance requirements I wrote down were copied from the Havoline can I bought today, in pre-mixed 50% form. And guess what? They have changed dye! Now, it's yellow (at least the pre-mixed one). So I'll have a rainbow in my expansion tank.

Thanks for your valuable help.
And WHY can't we europeans buy Prestone down here? Maybe time to search at rockauto or somewhere else to get these shipped internationally?

I always renew my coolant every 2 years, the problem is that when I bought my D2 it was 5 yrs old and the bodge has already been done. The former owners had mixed the OAT with the green stuff and my radiator leaked like a sieve, hoses were disrupted and HG gave up the ghost last year, together with the ACE control module. 3K in all. So now it was time for a top up before renewal next summer and just wanted to be sure what I poured in my expansion tank
Best regards from the other side of the pond

Just get the Prestone in the grey/silver bottle with the orange cap, 50/50 mix. Got mine at Walmart. Local parts stores usually have it too.
