Oil Leak or Oil Burning

So last night some dumb ass was driving really slow getting on to the interstate so when it was time to merge, I punched it and kept an eye in my rear view to make sure I didn't get rear ended and in the headlights behind me I could see a lot of smoke but only when I jumped on the throttle hard.

So am I burning oil or do I have a leak and it is getting onto the manifolds when I only romp on it???? Where would I start to diagnose this issue...

TIA

Cover ignition components and ECU, degrease and pressure wash. Look for leaks.

A compression test will reveal poor oil control and compression rings.

Check your valve cover breather hoses.

Just got done washing the engine with degreaser. The engine was really greasy around the oil pressure sending unit. Is it common to leak there? Also, how does a DIY do a compression test and is that to see if it is burning oil?

Thanks,
Jeremy

A commonly overlooked item is the PCV valve.
If it is plugged it will allow the engine to "vacuum" your oil under acceleration.
I only know this thanks to a 113 dollar install fee of that silly little 10 dollar part from my local dealer!
Best of luck,
Glen

The sending unit is clean so I will know if it pisses oil. I have all new PVC hoses and filter so I don't think that's it. Also, it was night and I only noticed because the car that was right on my ass you could see the smoke in his headlights. Don't know what color it was...

could've just been carbon buildup being blown out. how often are you on the throttle like that? if it is infrequent, that could be the culprit.

Try keeping a close check on the dipstick level for awhile to ascertain if the level is droping prematurly, presently mine is using or leaking a litre (appx 1 US quart) every 500 miles, i recon that is abnormal but i'm not concerned as i have a spare engine ready to go in, since mine has droped a couple of liners as well.........

Ah! such are Land Rovers.........:)

Just got done doing an oil change and it was within the limits before I drained her so she isn't using oil but I will keep an eye on it if something just recently happened.

I don't get on the throttle that much like that but I will put some sea foam in the tank to clean it up a bit. What is the preferred method of sea foaming?

Put her in neutral and have some one watch the tail pipe while you get on it. Should produce about the same effect, althought the engine wont be under the same load.

It seems to be leaking from a bolt holding the ac/altenator bracket to the engine. Is that even possible?

Edit: The two upper bolts came out with oil on them. To see wich bolts see pic.
