Oil Pressure Light

Hi guys,

It i has been a while :(

The other day coming home from work the oil pressure light came on for a few seconds while driving the car, but went off. I parked it when I got home. Today I go to check the oil level on the dip stick, and it is dry as a bone :(

I have added one qt of oil and now I can see a little (about the size of the with of a pinky finger) on the stick.

My questions are.

1) is it normal for a rover to loose that much oil? It has been a while sense I had a oil change, I missed my 38k checkup and I am now at 48k. Eg, is it normal for the rover to eat oil like that, and I should just check it more often?

2) After I get the oil back to normal levels, how safe would it be to drive? Would I be able to drive it about 10 - 15 miles to the shop to have it looked at?

3) The engine runs fine and the temp levels stayed normal as far as I know and I have not really had any problems. What are the chances that i have destroyed something?

4) This all happened after I had the car appraised for trade in at (at a non rover dealer ship). What are the possibilities that they did something to remove the oil to ensure that I would have a real *need* to get a new car?

How much? You don't say how long it's been since you last checked the oil.

I'd say #2 is yes if #3 is true.

Unlikely, but personally I'd never let my car out of my sight in a situation like that, no matter who the dealer is.

I check my oil every time I fill up. Gives me something to do instead of standing there staring at the pump.

It has been about 16k miles sense my last oil change. I have been sort of waiting for my office to move, but they keep delaying the move. I now work within walking distance of the shop I take my rover too!

Ok, so now that we have established I sucked at getting my oil changed.

What sort of things can I look forward to being damaged?

Oh boy. You will probably be fine in the short term. However, your best bet is to accept whatever they offer (probably won't be much) for the trade in and get a Honda Civic.

There are two things that will cause the premature death of a Land Rover engine...

Overheating and NOT CHANGING THE OIL OFTEN ENOUGH!

Change the fawking oil yesterday!
Because I have a bad memory, and could never remember to change the oil, I came up with a great solution.
I removed the oil pan drain plug, and mounted a 55 gallon drum of oil on the roof rack.
I then connected a tube from the drum up top to the oil filler neck and I just run continuously clean oil through the engine.
Plus, as a bonus, I can always find my way home by following the line of oil.

And I caught hell for my prior coolant disposal practices, in spite of the documented acceptance/allowed status.

Jim, contact Blue, or JSQ and have one of them write you a Spill Prevention, controls and Countermeasures plan and file a continuous release notification.

You know that other things need to be serviced too besides the oil right? BTW, losing a qt. every 6000 miles is not a cause for concern. Not checking your oil is. I'm not trying to be mean and I'm sure everybody here knows that LR's need regular checking and maintenance.
