Overheat Disaster

I had a disaster with my 99D1 yesterday and want to get opinions as to what went wrong and what I'm looking at. After driving 45 minutes or so with no problems, I noticed my temperature gauge shoot up. I mean fast. Within seconds, really just seconds, it went from the normal range to hot! I turned the heat on full blast and got to the side of the road as fast as I could. I actually turned the truck off and rolled to the shoulder and then down into a parking lot. I noticed my upper hose was venting through a small tear and thought that was the problem. I let it cool down, walked to a parts store, got a generic flex hose and antifreeze, yada yada.

When I put in the antifreeze, it ran out the back of the engine like I was pouring it on the ground. I don't mean drip, I mean pour! By back of the engine, it seemed to be between the block and the bell housing. WTF!?!?! Any ideas??? Freeze plug blown out? I actually checked my fluids last weekend and all was well. Needless to say, I had it towed to a dealership, as I couldn't find a shop I know of that would look at it. If you're in the Atlanta area (Gwinnett) and know of a good shop, please let me know for future reference! I'm sick over this! :ack:

the tear in the hose could have been pressurizing the system. not sure about the leak in the back.

OK... The shop just called and said they filled it up and no leaks, nothing. This makes no sense! My wife and friend are dumbfounded also. I asked the shop to test drive it and get it up to temp. I've never heard of anything so weird. I'm pretty sure my wife thinks I'm trying to hide the repair costs; she kept repeating, "I saw it pouring out! I know it was leaking!"

If your are still doubtful take it to Luke and the boys at "The Shop" and have them take a good look at it. They are highly recommended. Oh and while your at it pick yourself up a scanguage or other direct reading gauge so that you can moniter water temp. Factory guages SUCK and only have cold normal and too late modes.

Cheers,

Mike

How the fawk could a leak to the atmosphere result in pressurizing the system?

Sorry, but this ain't the case, back to general physics class with you!

What probably happened is that the leaking hose prevented the cooling system from pressurizing and it overheated and under operating temp conditions, the rear of the head gasket failed allowing the coolant to pour out.

Your best case scenario is head gasket replacement.

had the exact same issue when a hose failed on me in Feb...put money on the gasket having failed near the water jacket.

yeah PT called it, sounds like your head gasket needs to be replaced. Do it yourself or pay some $$ to get someone to crawl under there and do it for ya. It ain't gonna be cheap, then again...nothing Rover is unless you do it yourself, which is why I suggest the latter :)

Somehow I dodged a bullet. Top hose and thermostat were replaced and all seems fine. I've put about 200 miles on since and no overheating or leaks. I too thought it'd be the headgasket. I'll never go to LR Gwinnett again. They replaced my top hose with a generic 'flex' hose, charged 1-1/2 hours labor to change the hose & thermostat, add fluids and pressure test. What are the book hours for such a job? Additionally, they explained that their is no testing to see if the CC ECU is bad; he knew nothing about an EKA code for D1's and in regards to replacing a keyless remote told me, 'I think a new remote can be programed for your truck... yeah I think so.'

stay out of buckhead. it might be worth the drive to PT. or i have some numbers to call. they are not LR pro's but they will be honest. they will not be fast.....

As TDI user, to limit disasters in case of trouble with hoses, heater, pump and so, I constructed myself a small alarm for coolant high temperature and/or low level.

There are a lot of such devices in order to protect engines in the market (almost in underdeveloped countries:) ), I suggest that since our Discos are old enough to have high probability from suffer this kind of faults, these cheap devices are usefull.

ASAP, replace that upper hose with one that is supposed to fit. If needbe, I have four or five in stock.

Inspect ALL of your hoses, Hell, replace them all.

Now, don't go back if they don't know the CC ECU test procedure or how to troubleshoot one. It's in the ETM for God's sake.

As the older techs move on, the younger ones don't want to be bothered by our relics any more. Personally, I'd rather work on a DI or RRC than anything else, even a Defender.

In the meantime, keep a close eye on your coolant level as I expect you to have a head gasket failure soon.

I'm with you on all that and had the hoses delivered today... goes on tomorrow AM.

I love working on my truck and hated sending it in. This past year I had 3 discs fused in my neck and I'm just now getting back to being able to dig into it. The disc thing resulted from an 86 year old lady on a 'day pass from a nursing home.' She exited a parking lot at ~45mph thinking she was 'getting on an on-ramp.' There's not one around for miles. I'm glad I was driving my wife's truck... not to be an ass, but I'd rather trash a Frontier than a Disco!

Thanks for your help!!
