1999 DI 126,000 miles.

This is my brothers rover who recently rebuilt the motor with a 4.6 kit from Mark at aluminum V8.com. For the past two months we cannot track down this p0340 code. The truck is not having misfire codes and runs fine. Even took it to a local Rover Only mechanic who's only advice was "I've never seen this before, and only suggestion was removing the front timing cover and going from there.

P0340: CAMSHAFT SENSOR FAULT OR SIGNAL TIMING DIFFERENT FROM CRANKSHAFT SENSOR SIGNAL (DRIVING CYCLE A)

PT suggested it could be the crankshaft positioning sensor that is throwing the code, so replaced it with a new one but it did not take care of the code issue.

Questions:

?*Could it be Crankshaft Sensor?
?*Would a grounding issue cause this?
?*Anything else I should be checking?
Thanks guys!

I cant recall exactly what was included, but it was the performance kit with new cams, larger bearings for the crank, timing chain, cam bearings, etc.

He spent some good $ to have a local shop do the machine work and the rebuild.

If it helps I can call Mark and get a complete list.

Think the new parts and the code could be related?

Check wiring to CmPS to ECU, it's easy to crimp the wires on reassembly.

Will do.

Does anyone else get the "because I talked you into getting a rover I will be forever obligated to fix it" feeling?

I hate that feeling.

When using Mark's cam and timing cog, you must use a spacer on the cam sensor. Did they install this spacer? You should be able to see it on the outside of the front cover.

I will check that right now in the rain!

Crap! There IS a spacer.

I was getting pretty excited thinking it was that simple. :(

I had a very similar problem, in the end it was ruptured wire insulation at the crankshaft sensor. This effected the sensor, threw the codes and eventually had to be replaced. The heat from the exhaust manifold seemed to be the culprit. I re-insulated the wires, replaced the sensor and all was right with the world again.

The codes indicated the Cam Shaft sensor, but it was Crack Shaft. Apparently it is a common problem.

I think I found the problem!

The wires to the CkPS seem to have been "repaired" at some point and have a straight connector on it that looks shot, and the second wire appears to be in bad shape as well.

Because I ran out of time I will let my bro know and he can replace those wires and see if that helps and will post an update.

Crazy how many Disco's out there with this problem.
