Since all the techs here hate both of these things and you can find 03-05s for like $6k now, I was just curious...

If for some reason you had to daily drive and personally maintain one for a year or two, what would you rather have?

I like the P38. I'm gonna start looking for a good clean GEMS unit after I get this Disco I just bought straightened out. I think a BMW L322 is worth about a half a can of cat shit right now. small can. It would take more than 6 grand to keep a BMW L322 going for 2 years.

Ive got both, I like the half a can of catshit, cant beat the ride with great torque Ive had it about 5 years it has 180K its been a pretty good truck , will probably keep it till I run it in the ground, get one with good maintenance and they will last a long time, Ive owned 2 P38s currently have one, the current one is not as good as the old one that my son wrecked, never had a problem with it (but I still have the engine from the wrecked one, its going into a 03 disco II trail truck) the P38 is similar to all the discos Ive owned, I just replace the 4th head gasket at 140K, the last one lasted only 10K but that's because the dipshit that changed them put them on upside down. I like them both but they are Rovers so your going to have some bumps in the road. Bottom line is get one that has been maintained. My vote is the can of catshit L322 all day especially if they are 6K, Id jump on it, hell a clean disco II is bringing 6-7K I sold a mediocre 01 disco with 135K mi for $4500 in Nov. and I have a buddy that sold an 05 L322 that was wrecked for 4K. and to the gentleman that says the bmw l322 is a can of catshit how many have you owned and how long did you have it/them? what major problems did you have with it so far other than a valley pan and replacing the timing chain and guides as preventative maintenance Ive been happy.

I've never owned either one. Just a know it all ass hole. But I have worked on them both professionally as a Land Rover Dealership Tech. Since 1999.

I think once you experience the steering column lock ECU malfunction, or a strut rupture, or a fuel pump , or an alternator , water pump, wheel bearing that you can't get the axle out of, or the dead battery after it sits for a day or two, or the light check module full of water , or the security immobilization that makes you think it's a fuel pump.......... You might take my half a can of cat shit

Eric your talking about one repair that I guess it's right to be afraid of. A $1200 part and some programming. But every one of those repairs I just listed on a BMW Range are that expensive and more likely to be needed one after the other. Then the other thing I guess you would have to think about is Blend Door Motors. But thats not going to leave you stranded in a P38

That sounds like the deal of a lifetime. Low mileage GEMS P38 for $325? You probably won't see another one come along like that. Around here morons are asking $6,000 for high-mileage trucks with stupid huge chrome wheels.

Which repair is this?

The BECM. But honestly they get replaced in error all the damn time. Give you an example, I got a car last fall that somebody diagnosed as a BECM causing the battery to be drained overnight. Probably a fairly good guess because the mechanic who diagnosed it removed all the battery feeds to it and the parasitic load went away. It came to me with the BECM already installed and the owner just wanted me to program it, it was a used BECM and the days of sending them to Land Rover and having the VIN taken out of them is gone. I don't know where the equipment to "clean them" went. But it's gone.
I put his old BECM back in the vehicle and started to diagnose the parasitic load. I unplugged one connector at a time til the one that I unplugged let everything go to sleep and the parasitic load went away. You have to wait at least 15 to 20 min. after each connector gets unplugged so it's kind of time consuming. The reason the BECM was staying awake and killing the battery was the fuel door release button was shorted out and that signal is a "wake up" for the BECM. So it was a $25 switch and not a $1300 BECM.
I know that's kind of what you asked about when you asked if the BECM was or wasn't something to be scared of. The point I'm trying to make is that they most often get replaced in error. I've seen a couple fail and they caused lighting issues or some other stupid little horseshit.

I really like the P38, I want one bad. There is something very cool about the ride you get from the air suspension in a straight axle truck. Yes you need to know a little about them to diagnose them properly but that's really not an issue for somebody like you. You got the board here to ask questions and get answers. Honest to god the BMW Range is a piece of shit, if somebody tells me they have good luck with one and really like it. I ask them to buy a lottery ticket for me, I'll drive.

Im kinda bummed now I didnt snap up a Callaway with 200k for like $2000 last summer. I was looking more for a reliable daily driver though.

The normal ones pop up here for under $2k all the time though, and this is all tempting me...:leaving:

Just picked up a p38, 88 k 1996 from Colorado , better yet I paid 325.00 for it. saved it from the junk yard told them I'm buying it for the wheels.
Had a lot of issue but once I sorted everything out , I Love the damn thing.

I probably would have set this thing on fire, but for the price I was motivated to get it running.
It wasn't fun at all , all alarms were dinging, left door handle broke , flat bags , but thanks to WILL and DRILLBIT is up and going learned a lot but still kind of scared of them.

I cant really think of any one spot. I know when the paint gets damaged in the usual spots it gets bad. Behind the rear wheels and stuff like that.

Are the frames on the GEMS trucks on par with or better than the D1? Its kind of a big deal for me cause they salt the shit out of everything in the winter.

I don't know the spec on thickness, but I don't recall ever seeing one rust thru. Keep in mind they are a not around in the numbers we see of the Disco. Don't really know why that is. Good clean examples are really hard to find. Especially GEMS trucks. And trucks still on ir suspension even more so.
