P38A A/C control panel problem...

Hi Guys,
the screen on the control panel of my heating/ac unit is messed up- parts of the green numbers are missing. I used to be able to gently run my fingertip over it and it'd fix it- but no more. Anyone else experienced this?

The LCD display is connected to the PC board by a band of silicone rubber with a row of fine wires embedded in it, and there are several reasons for those wires to lose contact at either end.

1) corrosion; possibly due only to age but accelerated by chemicals like Coke, dash or window cleaners, or pollution in the air

2) insulation; usually due to oils from skin or dash treatments, but possibly from vehicle leaks inside the cab

3) mechanical deformation; due to vibration over the years bending the fine wires so they no longer extend to the edge of the silicone band, and they just don't touch any more

You have a SLIM chance of correcting 1, a slightly better chance on 2, and no chance on 3. Basically, you have to replace the panel. :(
