PayPal Question

In the bunker
I've got a vehicle listed on Craigslist, and I'm wading through the usual "I'm a petroleum engineer on an offshore oil rig, your price is acceptable, I'll PayPal you the funds..." scams. But I had one guy who sounded halfway legitimate, then wanted to know if I had a PayPal account.
I use PayPal to buy parts, but have never made a large purchase or sale with it.
My question is are ALL offers to pay for an automobile on PayPal scams?
It actually does sound safer than walking around with a big roll of hundred dollar bills in your pocket.

How do the guys on eBAY do it? Don't they accept PayPal? I'm sitting here trying to figure out how you could possibly get scammed by him sending money to you through Paypal............. and I can't think of how that might work.
Maybe have him send the money, then wait till you can transfer it out (usually 3-4 days) before he takes possession of the vehicle?

paypal charges can easily be reversed, and at least with ebay they are fast to take the funds from the seller. I'd take a deposit via paypal, but if it's a large amount I'd want cash.

(btw, I bought my Rover on ebay and paid via paypal, but it was only $500).

Yes, its a scam. What happens is he paypals you, sends someone to get the car then reverses the payment. The money comes out of your paypal account. If you have already taken it out of paypal your paypal goes negative. If you don't bring it up to positive within 6 months paypal sues you. Most people who sell cars on ebay only take 200-500 as a deposit and make the person bring the rest in cash. If the guy is legit tell him to paypal you 500 and you will hold it for him or tell him to wire it. Once a wire goes through there are absolutely no take backs.

Never made a large purchase or sale via paypal or ebay like a vehicle, but i would venture to say that if there is a doubt as to the authenticity of the buyer's intentions, i would rather deal in person than get scammed. After all, if the buyer is genuine and wants that specific vehicle, he or she will make an effort to show up in person with certified funds. Just an opinion. Good luck with the sale.

P.S. when i had listed my G4 on CL, a gentleman from Ohio IIRC, came down in person and we dealt face-to-face.

So how long does one have to reverse payment on PayPal after sending it? Just wondering why all these guys getting screwed by Lincoln don't just reverse the payment?

I've got someone coming to buy a vehicle tomorrow and I am requiring cash. Once it's in the bank, they'll get the car.

Not willing to take any chances on bad checks, reversed charges, etc. Green speaks.

Paypal gives you 45 days, if you fund the payment with your credit card it's up to your card. Most are at least 90, some are up to a year.

none of your fucking business
I bought my series (albeit in via credit card) through paypal and the seller was completely open with receiving the paypal. It was delivered in two payments...I bought the rolling chassis first and then decided I wanted the rest of her to the tune of about 5 grand.

I wouldn't shy away from it too much....money is money.

Couldn't the seller hold on to the vehicle's title until the funds are cleared?

If the buyer tried to reverse, the seller still would have the title; call the police"Somebody stole my car".

In God We Trust. All others pay cash.

These days I don't trust paypal when I'm the seller. Too many people doing exactly what Marty said. I had a kid steal moms cc and buy $1000 of parts from me for his motorcycle. Paypal sends me an email 5 days after I shipped and tells me not to ship b/c owner didn't authorize use of card. In other words the $1000 is gone.
