Just a random anecdote… I recently bought a 2011 Range Rover that was pretty quiet when I bought it. I did an oil change with JLR branded Castrol 0w20 and the motor is super noisy. Very obvious now that I need to replace the timing chain tensioners and guides. I’m curious what oil they had in it to make it quiet.

the JLR castrol is really good oil. I wonder if it wasn’t that they were using thicker oil, just shitty oil. Then the castrol just cleaned whatever gunk was in there out into the filter.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with quality, the noise was evident immediately after startup.

im just saying I’m surprised that using a different weight oil would quiet it down that much without causing cam/crank correlation faults. Not a big deal as I’ll throw new tensioners and guides on it, just thought it was an interesting observation

almost every one. Didn’t do the one before this week’s. I try to keep it under 7000, my longest was 7700ish. I’m still waiting on some more sample jars from blackstone.
I'm hovering between 5-6K these days. I was stretching it past 7 a bit but started to notice a loss of as much as a quart between changes. This truck (LR4 '16) is the neediest vehicle I'm ever owned. Like the looks, just enough interior capacity, and the road manners but Jayzus! it's needier than it should be, IMO. Water pumps, coolant hoses, and rotary shifters shouldn't shit the bed below 100K.

I have vehicle ADHD and constantly am thinking about what I'd replace the LR4 with but nothing comes up. I test drove everything that it "compares to" in the off-road space and nothing comes close. Yea, its a little needy compared to a Toyota or domestic truck but those are just so boring.

I rented a 4-Runner in Montana last month and had an afternoon to run up into the mountains. Not impressed at all on the road but it was very comfortable off road. Power was blah but adequate. On the road it handled like a pig.

After reading about your experience test driving other vehicles and other comments on jeep... then finally driving LR4, I really didn't need to bother looking further on a capable SUV.

Now I'd like to replace P38 with a new Q5, but that will wait a year or two.

Did the crazy recommended oil change on the 2016 LR4 I just got. Really quieted the engine down. Wow. Unbelievable. Should I put this oil in old rovers? lol.

What can I do to ensure/test engine, Timing chains, etc..I want a solid platform to start. Should I send oil in for test?

If you change the oil regularly you’ll probably never need to do the timing chains on that.
Most of service seems done by LR, so I hope only last oil was cheap. Just amazing the difference in engine noise with the recommended oil.

So, after changing oil with the recommended stuff using a vaccuum and mahle filter I notice oil on the garage floor for the first time.

Doesn't look like any spillage or anything from fill or filter area, so gonna remove skid and see what I find. Seems strange.

-- And yes oil level was near max before change. Now it is at max. --
