PING..rattle rattle..thud - no more tapping noise from the engine (but new problem)

After a drive in my 00D2...parked it.. a few minutes later.. I heard this ping noise followed by some rattling and then a thud as the bolt head hit the ground! An exhaust manifold bolt head decided to decapitate itself!

Assuming the manifold is OK (I have no reason to believe it is leaking/cracked). Can I remove the rest of the bolts and replace them without removing the manifold from the y-pipe..or is there not enough play to do that.

Or is it good enough to leave as is, sans one bolt?

Good news is the tapping noise is gone! LOL! I guess I should have tighened the bolts when I had a chance!

Oh well

should be able to, but getting to the remaining bolt could be an issue...soak them with pb blaster and hopefully you won't break anymore...

Thanks,

I can pull the manifold over the remaining stud left when the head of the bolt got sheared off?

The bolts, if soaked well, generally come out OK?

well...maybe...probably could...but first you should make some kind of sacrifice to the rover gods

soak them with pb and don't go crazy with torque

or you could break them all off...mine cam off with no problem, it's about the only thing I haven't had an issue with on the motor

Tread lightly here my friend! If you don't, you run the risk of becoming as proficient at heli-coiling as I am ;-)

You may be able to move the manifold enough but I think the risk is so great that it would be a small price to pay to risk breaking a stud in the manifold-and, should you do so, you have the manifold off so it's much easier to drill or otherwise remove the stud stub (tee hee).
