Pinion/diff guard

Just alittle something I built over the weekend.

Its all 3/16" plate. Where it bolts to the diff I doubled the plate at the diff and welded another plate under it to go under the pinion. This gave alittle extra room incase a rock bends it up. Since I put sides on the pinion guard I drilled a hole in the center of the yoke to allow mud and water to drain as well as to get a greese gun in there if needed.

I took the pictures while doing a test fit so ignore the odd looking bolt and primer.
I also have since welded a bracket to the rear that is bolted to my diff cover for alittle added strength.

Post up what you think and what you would change.
Thanks

i'm curious as to why you covered the absolute thickest part of your axle.

looks good, but your effectively lowering your lowest point.
not so sure those sled type guards are really necessary

I mainly built it because I like to build things. While doing a locker install I noticed that the bottom studs and nuts had taken a beating. The drain plug also was beat up and the housing is very thin. Now its all covered.

I took the pictures with the primer because I didnt think black would show detail. Its black now.

diff housing thin...??

uh, i think you need to check out the inside of a rover axle.

in any case, nice job.
i applaud home-fab over buy-n-bolt anyday!

I know the 3rd member is cast and very thick but the axle housing itself looks to be cold rolled material. I would say no more then 2/16" thick. I know its strong but I wanted to cover the 3rd member bolts and studs as well as the drain plug.

Thanks for the fab. compliment.

I'd say it's closer to 4/32" thick

ok ok 1/8"!!! Does that make everyone feel better? I feel like I am back in college and my english professor is grading my paper!

I thought this website was for people to come together to share thoughts and mods about Land Rovers, not a "I wonder who I can flame next and be an internet badass" website.

I enjoyed building that and posted it up so people could copy it for the better of their rovers.

I greatly apologize for my major error.

i'm the jerk so i'll just say it, it's sucks. It's not practical for offroading, if you are hitting your pinion right there you got some other issues, like a broken driveshaft. and the rest of the diff part you can put on a rock with no problem. focus on the real fragile stuff like the other side of the diff, the top, you got skills so you failed once, try again.

Looks like he already has an RTE weld on diff gaurd. I guess he could cut that off and do a sewer cap? As good as the pinion gaurd is he could probably make a great one.

I have hit my pinion there and was glad I had a gaurd. :p
