Pleae help with 96 D1 stalling diagnosis

I have done a number of searches to find similar problems and have come up with some ideas but need a bit more insight/expertise.

PROBLEM: D1 starts fine, runs fine for about 10 minutes, then suddenly loses power and dies. If I try to re-start immediately (as in seconds), it will run only for a few seconds. If I let it sit (cool down??) for maybe 5 minutes, then I will get it to run for another minute or so. If I let it sit longer, say 15 minutes, it will run a bit past a couple minutes, then die as before. Leave it overnight, and it will run again, no problem for the ten minutes or so. With the "recovery" period from cooling down, I am thinking some kind of heat soak issue? I should note, I have a winch operated snowplow on the vehicle but have run it with the plow for the last 4 years without any problems, this just happened this season. The start-run-die issue did seem to coincide with a no-start condition related to the alarm lock out that was remedied by cycling the door locks a few times, maybe pointing to a spider problem??

WHAT I HAVE DONE/CHECKED:
-Battery charge - good at 12 volts. Trickle charged overnight anyhow. Cranks and starts strong.
-Alternator-not quite up to +13.4 volts, so changed it out. Still stalling problem.
-CKPS-no codes, but changed it out anyhow as this seemed to be a common culprit. Problem still there.
-Fuel pressure - did not put a gauge on it, but it squirts out with lots of pressure.
-Check for any obvious vacuum leaks - no hoses cracked/missing.

WHAT NEXT?
-Change fuel filter?
-Bad gas?
-Change fuel pump relay?
-Change fuel pump?
-Clean MAF?
-Change IAC valve?
-Change coil pack?
-Change ECM?
-Change fuse box?
-Change spider unit?

OTHER IDEAS?

I don't want to throw too much money at this in a random fashion so if anyone has any ideas on hwo to go about trouble shooting this properly, I would really appreciate it. What are the chances of a bad new CKPS?

Thanks

An engine needs three things to run: air, fuel & spark. Could be clogged fuel injectors, dirty air filter, fouled plugs, so on & so forth. The fact that it runs, then dies, points to some sort of heat related issue, but I have no idea what that could be. Make of this what you will.

Sounds a lot like what mine was doing. It wasn't the ckps or the wiring going to it but a poor connection between the pins of the sensor and terminals in the connector.

Got a chance to run it again and wait for the stall. Checked the fuel pressure immediately after it stalled and the residual pressure was 36lbs. I think that is okay so does that point away from a possible dying fuel pump?

As I was paying closer attention to the expected stalling this time around, I also noticed some unevenness in the idle just before it quit. I don't know if that means a whole lot but since I have a spare IAC valve, I am going to change it out when I get a chance.

Any other ideas?

It would be useful to watch the readings from O2 sensors, intake air temperature, and coolant temperature when the truck is about to stall. Do you have UltraGauge or Bluetooth OBD-2 gizmo?

Unfortunately, I don't have any 0BDII tools that can give me real-time readings, just have a scanner. There are no stored codes BTW.

As much as I love this truck, I am really hating it right now. Without haphazardly changing everything that might be a problem, I am still not sure how to best troubleshoot this issue.

You just may enjoy the convenience of OBD-2 in your truck; a Bluetooth OBD-2 adapters start at $13 and change on Amazon, and $5 buys you the TorquePro app for an Android device.

Is your truck running lean or rich just before it dies?

Re: Please help with 96 D1 stalling diagnosis

It runs rich before stalling. I'm hoping that is not pointing to O2 sensors....

Re: Pleae help with 96 D1 stalling diagnosis-seems resolved

Just wanted to post a follow up to this as the truck seems to not stall out anymore.

Last thing I did was I changed the idle air control valve. It was still stalling after that but I noticed some more gyrations in the idle just before it stalled.

I adjusted the throttle cable just minutely to increase the base idle. Since doing this, it has not stalled.

Could this have been the problem all along? Who knows?

Whatever it was, I am happy it is working for now.

DemeraraDisco,

I'm curious if you've had any further issues or resolution. My '97 is exhibiting the same symptoms after a T-Case swap and sitting for 5 months. I'm going to change the fuel filter, and may change the fuel pump, but will also check the ACV.

Thanks.
