First, check the oil/grease in the CV housing. This is the #1 cause of a clicking CV. You may have to remove the rotor to access the stub axle bolts on a 1997 to see if your oil/grease level is okay since the 97's did not have the center fill hole.
If the oil/grease looks good, jack up the front end before pulling the hub apart and have a look around. Make sure the brake caliper is tight, wheel bearings feel good, note that the drive flange is tight, etc... Also check all the tie rod ends and bushings in the drag link and radius arms.
You're not stuck in diff lock, are you?
What happens in these HD CV's is the bell wears. These CV's are hard - harder than stock. A stock CV is built to last where as the HD CV's are built to not break. They do wear faster, though. In other words, the balls in the CV become loose because the seats they ride in wear. It should not cause you any problems other than the annoyance.
