Occasional popping noise when hard turn(right) from front. Initial thought is CV. Problem is these are Rovertracks HD CV's/axles. Keith/RT not in business anymore from what I understand these weren't cheap any suggestions or alternatives (if just the CV's)?

Your tires aren't rubbing(making a popping noise) on your radius arms, are they? Wishful thinking?

Otherwise, CV's would be my first guess. :(

I'm not saying my tires don't rub but think it's the CV's Rovertracks units were like 650.00 (on sale)3-4 yrs ago? not sure I want to drop that in what is essentially my trail rig/cabin mobile thought I had it built went a long time without breaking anything

First, check the oil/grease in the CV housing. This is the #1 cause of a clicking CV. You may have to remove the rotor to access the stub axle bolts on a 1997 to see if your oil/grease level is okay since the 97's did not have the center fill hole.

If the oil/grease looks good, jack up the front end before pulling the hub apart and have a look around. Make sure the brake caliper is tight, wheel bearings feel good, note that the drive flange is tight, etc... Also check all the tie rod ends and bushings in the drag link and radius arms.

You're not stuck in diff lock, are you?

What happens in these HD CV's is the bell wears. These CV's are hard - harder than stock. A stock CV is built to last where as the HD CV's are built to not break. They do wear faster, though. In other words, the balls in the CV become loose because the seats they ride in wear. It should not cause you any problems other than the annoyance.

Thanks Dan on all that. I'll check it (grease/fluid levels) I don't drive it much it does occasionally feel like it's getting wound up Dlock always appears to disengage though last time I had it engaged was out in Moab in fall even used the lockers a few times they all seemed to release after using weird that after checking wheel bearings recent it (popping) seemed to go away and it turned and ran freely then i didn't drive it for 2 mos.

I agree on the grease and bearing check. Also would check how much float or play is in the axle and flange. Too much movement could be a cause (maybe??) I know a washer/spacer is sometimes used to meet specs.

Assume not a broken QT mount.....

Also, I know my rovertracks fronts grunt and pop. Really only notice when wheeling (high stress/load scenerios) I've done swivels, bearings, and everything else with no change.

Best solution was a new stereo amp! All sounds great and I'll look if I stop moving...

Thanks on that Flyfish I agree that most of that popping noise can be eliminated with a better stereo I have one ordered I'm hoping that once I relocate Rover to Colorado that the mountain air will do it good. I know it does me good.

The broken QT mount? Wow that's a legit suggestion could it be that I have broken yet a 3rd QT mount? I forgot all about that we did some challenging stunts out in Moab so quite possible thanks again

Xactly don't have time to fuck with it now I'm with Flyfish at this point and just get better stereo but thanks on suggestions I'm going to check them all out (it snowed today so I drove it to work and it ran fine-no popping no matter turning or whatever) I think it(Rover) heard me say I was relocating it to another home and it's rebelling!)

yeah actually have the (Jag) mounts as spares now Justin(Lky 8) was bewildered at my ability to break(QT's) something makes me think it was the mounting(bolts?) or something that either sheared off or rounded off either way it sucked

I broke one, too. But my 4.0 was a super powerhouse. Was probably making 118hp at the flywheel.

Ha! yeah, since I added the snorkel maybe the supercharger effect is just too much for the little guys(QT's) or maybe I'm just such jackass driver and as Flyfish alluded I should treat my luxury off road vehicle with more care and respect (of course I haven't checked the motor mounts so probably not related but......)

do you really "Flyfish"?

118? That's Honda Civic Vtec territory right there! If I had a vehicle with that much power I'd wear a flat bill hat and have led lights on the chassis, bra!
