I can't see having 15 companies creating the infrastucture required to have nationwide parcel delivery. Even DHL depended on local USPS delivery for rural areas. Splitting up what is currently in place creates another situation like the Baby Bells.
Clean up and streamline what we currently have and forget about the idea of it being a self-sufficient company. The Feds are trying to socialize everything else, why would they spin the USPS off to the private sector?

Your tax dollars don't support this one, it gets no tax dollars. It also is forbidden to make a profit so its going to live one the edge. I am not sentimental about the post office but private companies charge big bucks for shipping stuff to rural areas, it would further cripple rural areas if it cost them 8 bucks everytime they had to mail a letter.

i loved saturday deliveries!

if the private companies decide to take over, it's going to be messy.

Why?

Most of the carriers in rural areas are people who go out and buy left hand drive jeeps, take the postal carrier's test, and start getting paid by the feds to deliver mail. Why would that be so hard for a company to take over?

There are places where aircraft owners are still tasked with dropping the mail out of their plane as they fly by to pick up weekend fishermen from New York.

The further into the future we go, the less and less we will rely upon regular mail for standard delivery. Packages will be the only thing really needed to be shipped.

was just thinking about how many people live out in the stix. if i was a private company looking to invest in the mail business, i'd be looking at how profitable it actually is. the northern part of our state is ridiculously sparse. it most likely would cost them a fortune to get mail to those fuckers. i was just thinking about how messy it would be to deal with the whole network.

because there's no PROFIT in delivering a letter for $0.50 to butt-fuck nebraska, that's why.
The rural routes would get cut, reduced and eventually eliminated.
My inlaws live in a rural area, and they don't use online bill pay for everything like I do. They use the US mail.
it would be gone in a heartbeat.
The further into the future we go, the less and less we will rely upon regular mail for standard delivery. Packages will be the only thing really needed to be shipped.
Why?
Because the check would suddenly materialize magically on my kitchen table?
My magazines would teleport themselves?

Without a PROFIT, private companies won't do it.
Don't get me wrong, I understand why.
But rural routes are not going to be profitable.
And I'm not going to pay an additional $13 per month to have my LRM Fedexed.

oh, also messy would be the updating that would have to be done buy whoever decides to start cleaning up after usps. i never thought that private companies couldn't take over, just that it would be a major investment.

if the 'man' made me postmaster extraordinaire, i'd probably start taking ritalin.

The post office generates revenue because of immense amounts of mail, tens of billions of pieces of mail. A dozen private companies would never be able to pull in enough pieces at a low enough rate. I can't take a letter from Wyoming to Maine for 44 cents, but throw it in with a few other million that are headed that way and you can do it. The post office is actually a pretty incredible organization when you look at what they do and how quickly (usually) they do it. they just have some issues, like spending 3/4ths of their revenue on employee salary/benifts. Oh and having a management position for something like every 12 regular employees. btw, not a postal employee.

LOL.....stop discussing reality!

The USPS is a non-governmental agency that is set up like a government agency. FAIL!

It is most certainly not profitable to deliver pieces of mail for 44 cents, as cleverly demonstrated by the USPS.

Forty-four cent mail to the stix is postal welfare. Be gone with it!

Why? They can't tax you, all this means is that postal rates go up. If junk mailers want to subsidize delivery for the rest of us let them. This thread is weak. Some one tell me how the continued existence of the post office is hurting them. Unless you work for UPS it isn't. Find something else to get your panties knotted up over.

I think I get one actual piece of mail that I either asked for or am required to get a week. Just drop it on Monday and take the rest of the week off. Keep all the shitty circulars and actually once a month would be fine.

If we don't have the USPS, how can Kevin Costner make those great post-apocalyptic films about postal carriers reuniting America?

Who will reunite us after the ZOMBIE apocalypse?

more than one time i have recieved a USPS overnight or package and there were the remains of a FEDEX or UPS sticker on there... I only ship USPS when i want the package to get lost or it is going somewhere crazy like the USvirginIslands or canada.... otherwise it is UPS or Fedex. And with the elimination of the USPS, there would be a huge savings of trees in the elimination of junk mail.. all Of my bills are e-bills so it doesnt matter to me whether it is gone...

A company operating at a loss in the billions is not a viable operation. It should not be put on life support, it should not be allowed to survive.
