I did the head gaskets without removing the fan. I broke the stud on the ps pump on reinstall. I now want to remove the fan to find leaks. I have a big crescent wrench but it won't fit.

How can I get the fan off?

I tried to get the tool from AutoZone yesterday but they did not have one for sale. They only had a loaner set.

I made one when I got home that will work if I can get the Bastard pulley to stop spinning in the belt.:banghead:

The tool has 2 parts, one fits on the 36mm nut and the other stops the pulley from spinning. You may be able to jamb a long screw driver or skinny bar between the bolt heads on the pulley to stop it from spinning.
The other option is to give the 36mm wrench a swift whack with a rubber hammer, sometimes the nut will crack loose - mind your knuckles!

I'm gonna try the pry bar tonight. I smacked the piss out of the wrench last night with a 2lb steel sledge.:D

As for the "other tool" that would explain the giant crows foot in the loaner kit.

Here is what I did when I replaced the water pump on my buggy. I found that my 15" crescent wrench was too wide to fit into the space needed, so with the fan belt installed I took a hammer and a long punch and gave the nut 3 strong whacks (in a counter ccw direction). The fan spun off easily as you please after the third hit. Install was the exact opposite though I did throw on some anti seize before. Hope this helps.

Well there is your problem; you only have half the tools in your arsenal needed to complete this task. The big-ass cresent wrench needs to be augmented by the big fuckin hammer. Only with this special tool combination will you be able to show that fan nut who truly is the boss.

18" cresent should fit

It does. The Crescent brand tools are skinnier than the Chinese-made cheapies at Northern or Harbor Freight. Jam a wadded-up rag between the pulley and belt to tighten things up....

Is this a left or right handed nut?

^^^May want to check this. I don't know about D1 vs. D2, but my RRC and D2 have opposite threads. I made the mistake of assuming they were the same when I tore apart the old 3.9.

I just did mine with the autozone special. the wrench part was a bit looser that I would like but it didnt strip out the nut at all. crows foot locks down between the bolts on the pulley. Easy.

Watch the thread direction, a D2 is a right hand thread. Not sure about a D1.

Yep.
Easy to get it backwards- counterclockwise when you need to whack it clockwise and vise-versa.

I've had my DII fan off and on half a dozen times with the crescent wrench/hammer method without any problem.
A quick sharp blow usually does the trick.

I said "blow".

If this is for your '94...or the DII... when standing infront of the radiator, looking aft and looking at the engine, you need to rotate the nut CCW to loosen. Right hand threads

Correct. It's that sharp whack rather than brute strength or a cheater bar that does the trick.

And when refitting, there's no need to torque it down tight...and use anti-seize. The rotation of the unit tends to tighten it down.
