What’s up guys. 2004 discovery power steering pump and steering gear replacement. Which pumps and boxes are recommended? Don’t want to go with the trial and error route. Would rather one and done it. Any suggestions? What about hydra steer conversion since I’m now on 35s? Anyone done it? Haven’t seen much info on hydra steer conversions

Safety inspections or not, an aftermarket full hydraulic setup has no place on the street. They're just not reliable enough.

Losing power assist at speed is bad but manageable. Losing all steering at speed is likely to be catastrophic.

If you feel you need more steering assist at low speeds I'd suggest looking at ram assist or similar.

I understand. A lot of things don’t belong in the street… beadlocks , drunk drivers…

anywho, anyone have any experience with lucky 8 steering boxes and pumps?

You can adapt a GM half-ton steering pump (write-up here). I haven't heard from Nick Markiw for a while, don't know if he's set up his shop to make more parts. If you go this route, you'll clean up engine compartment quite a bit, and gain a lot of steering assist - but if you don't shim the pressure regulator in the pump to ~1100 psi, you'll eventually blow the seals of the steering box.
The latter - I heard that P38A boxes are beefier than RRC/D1/D2 units. It will require some surgery to swap it in - at which point you could already start looking at 76-series Saginaw boxes.

If you rock crawl a lot, may need ram assist but I street mine mostly and not a big fan of the biggest rocks, so new stock has served me fine in the past. That is probably on my list in the next twelve months, but so far 2 years on 35s and no big issues.

I’m going to try that bap steering box and an “oe” pump from lucky 8. I would like to improve and upgrade just probably don’t have the time to make a project out of it.

I intend to drive it on the road regularly. California doesn’t have safety inspections, at-least that I’m aware of.
Cali does have safety inspections.. but they only toggle under certain circumstances. The 96 D1 in my user pic there was powered by a HD2.8VNT (Navistar Powerstroke, based on the 300tdi).. As they never existed in The States (diesel NAS discos), when I brought it in from Nevada i was compelled to have a safety inspection done. They were not very thorough, the inspector was a regular DMV drone (no personal offense intended :). Your results may vary.

*also, fix-it tickets can also cause an inspection.

If you want to keep the stock box but inprove boost control while eliminating the belt driven pump, see this thread:
