So the plastic strip that shows what gear I am in finally gave out on the shift console. It either got off track or got stuck in the track and ripped out when I went into low and is now just flopping around. What's involved with the replacement on these. Is it just the plastic strip or some whole assembly that is way too complicated and expensive? Considering mine is over 20 years old, not too bad I guess.

I got a used replacement from "DrillBit" for cheap. Just pull off the shift knob, squeeze the sides of the housing and lift part way, disconnect the multi-plug, lift away assembly. Reverse process to put in the replacement. The plastic tracks that the shutter rides in are crap and break very easily.

Sounds like a D1 vs D2 shifter bezel. On a D1 pull off the trim ring around the PRND321 assembly. Then pop the top off the shifter knob to gain access to the guts, and finally the nut. Then the shifter knob will lift up off the shifter Rod. I removed the console as it's easier to gain access to all the screws. Then unplug the 2 168/194 bulbs for the illumination and you should then be able to remove the entire PRND321 assembly.

On a D2 it's much much easier as you just pull up on the shift lever, then grab the PRND321 assembly, pull up, and disconnect the electrical connection and remove.

By the way... If the plastic film tore up when you shifted into low range, fat chance that your left-side engine and transmission mounts are toast.

Not low range, low gear. The engine mounts are brand new, I will check the trans mounts.
