Pulled my driveshaft apart...how does it go back on?

I replaced one of the u-joints in my front driveshaft just now (the t-case end) and noticed some water in the slipshaft area where you grease it. I pulled the rubber boot off the end and extended the shaft all the way out to clean out the water, and the shaft separated from the u-jointed piece. How do they go back together? Obviously the u-jointed piece slides back over the splines on the shaft, but is there a certain way they need to line up?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

obviously they need to go back in so the bolts line up on each end but you may have to re balance your shaft now.

just put it back on. you may have slight vibration but you probably won't even notice it.

I've done this, no vibes up til 100MPH. ;)

get it back to the exact place you had it or it very well may loose its balance. in which case you'll need it rebalanced

I don't know what kind of rover driveshafts you guys are taking apart, but the one's I've had apart are keyed, and only go together one way.

mine seems like it should be keyed...the u-jointed end has a 2-spline thick valley between one set of splines, but the shaft has no area that corresponds to the key. and no...i did not mark the shaft as i didn't expect it to pull apart

i'll clean it up and try in the morning. thanks for the help guys.

It's not just the balance, right? If you don't line up the two ends properly you end up with the u-joints out of phase and they bind (a little). At least that's what I've been told. Sound right to anyone?

Oh for the love of GOd, have you guys never looked closely at the driveshafts on your trucks?

There is an arrow on the female end of the splined shaft and another arrow on the end of the yoke.

They are separated pretty well, but if you look for them, you'll find the marks.

PT

this i did not know, and when i got PO'd and pulled mine apart i couldnt for the life of me get the damn thing back on. so, i did the really stupid thing, and beat it on. this of course threw it way out of balance, which forced me to do the u-joint conversion. the stupidest thing i've done on my rover, but also the best thing. so yeah, find said phantom arrows and get it right.

I know this is a brutally ancient thread, but does lining up the marks on the splined male/female end matter for a D2 REAR shaft? I didn't see any keyed splines. what am I missing?

I forgot to label mine when i changed the u-joint.. it just doesn't want to go back together without the use of a sledge hammer. :banghead:

edit: tallking about the slip yoke.

if you pulled the slip yoke apart, just line up the grease zerks when putting back together... anyone who builds a decent shaft knows to put all the grease zerks in a straight line.

I recall that the section go together in a certain phase.. Keep rotating until you get it. That said YMMV... (#1 rule in rebuilding a shaft: don't pull the sections of a shaft apart; #2 rule: mark relative locations of the yoke positions)

Edit: I see a whole body carriage. What's up with that? No total skeleton fab?

Actually.......Hats off. Very nice fab work. you've got more confidence in your welding skills than this guy (I'm afraid the first bump and 1/4 of my welds would snap in half).

Can't wait to see it together...it might give me confidence to start welding sh%t on my own....
