Arrived at the vet at 3pm, decision made, need to put her to sleep, call my GF to get to the vet ASAP. Seeing the clock on the wall ticking, and her lying on the table breathing heavily.....such a strange feeling of whether you want the time to come or delaying it......
Just seconds before my GF came in, the dog is crying in pain. my GF almost never go to pad her before she leave, as I want to stop the pain and want the vet to put her down ASAP. She is a 14 years old Golden Retriever, got her when she was 2 yrs old. I had a 4 years old Retriever at that time, but he was scar of getting outdoors, as in the city like HK, the cars the noise, etc... he just don't like it, so we got her to accompany him, and she did a great job leading him.

It all started with her scratching her ears and created a big cut. Wound cleaned few times a day and was in healing process, but still have white stuff coming out of her eyes and a really nasty breath. Then in a week time, she lost strength in her back legs. Well, I though it was the ears got infection and she cannot keep balance, plus I know she was getting weak at her joints. I just had to lift up her hip and slowly she will be able to walk, and once a while she was able to pick herself up from a sitting position.

But this morning is not very good, she just lay down breathing heavily. I feed her she can still eat and drink.

When at the vet, they look at her, they spot that she was having issues with her kidney, that is where her pain is coming from, and the bad breath, plus spot on the gum indicate a kidney failure.

She was actually very active till she was 10, then after that she seems to age very quickly, back then I though she will not made it through 2013, somehow she did and passed 1/2 of 2014 as well. She is one tough girl.

Great photo. She looks happy and right at home in the Disco. Sorry to hear about losing such a close friend. I'm trying to avoid thinking of the day when I have to go through this with my dog.

Sorry, for your loss I had to put two of my labs down at the same time last year. Hope this helps.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Lost Jim 2 yrs ago, I feel your pain.
.

That's what we did too, Marc.
Last October.
My wife got a house call vet.
Couldn't stand to take that final trip to the vet. She hated the vet office.
I cant blame her; I dont much like doctors' offices either.

Sorry for your loss Ed.

So sorry.

In time, you'll want, and get, another.

It's how we mark the stages of our lives - with the dogs we've known.

I'm sorry you have lost your friend. I still think about my ol' buddy Bob. I miss that mutt.

You gave your friend a good home and lots of love. That's more than many of them get. Your dog was blessed to have you, and you were blessed to have your dog.

I read (a long time ago) that when God made man and the animals, they were together. Then there developed between the animals and man a great chasm. As it was rising up and dividing man from the animals, at the last moment, dog jumped over to join man.

There is a special bond between a dog and a man. When you can find time and room in your heart, find another friend and enjoy that bond.

Again, sorry for your loss, and hope you remember the good times.

I know exactly how you feel, and I am so sorry for your loss. Me and my wife had to put "Buddy" our golden-mix down a few years ago after he battled bladder cancer for a year. It was a terrible day even though we knew we were doing the best thing for him. It was such a terrible loss. He was a family member and nothing less. I have a very similar picture of Buddy in the Rover. We have an Australian Shepard now and she is an awesome dog. I get sad thinking of the day we will lose her. My sympathies are with you.

Sorry for your loss. I had to put my 14yr old cat down last Thursday. She had advanced kidney failure and spent her last week barely able to walk. It was a hard decision, but I felt it was the best for her.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Very sorry for your loss and hope the above helps. I have 5 Labs that I look forward to crossing with.

Godspeed

Sadly, I have lost two of my closest human friends in the last two years, right around Independence Day. Even more sadly, they were done in by Sin and Gin-both would still be alive if they hadn't been drunks and junkies.

As for pets, everytime one dies, I grieve and wonder why I put myself through such misery, only to go right back and do it again. Just got a new Shop Moggy and in the spring another Lab. God must think I'm a good pet custodian as they seem to find their way to me easily enough.
