Car overheated last thursday, but the whole weekend spent trying to replicate the overheat, A/C, Highspeed driving, Parked midday in the sun for long periods with the A/C on. Nothing ?! The temp gauge would'nt more more then a mm and then stabilise no matter how hard I tried to over heat.

Past History. Sometime in feb I decided to do a small solo drive in the evening so went in didn't bother deflating ( 40 Psi ) and managed 80 % of where I wanted to go. But after like 20 mins of pushing I stopped to take a break and watch the sunset noticed there was hissing and there was dripping. Checked inside temp still stable, opened the hood and the system was overpressurized. I just put it off as pushing the car too hard.

Before this towards the end of last summer, was marshallling a newbie drive in a very easy drive so didn't deflate less than 20 PSI kept the A/C on full blast and towards the midday at the end of the drive I noticed temp 3/4th up. Opened hood, Expansion tank split at seams ( Know fault with these ) so shrugged is off as being old and replaced with new.

Have done many trips into the desert and thing never overheated

Other than these car ran perfect always ! Have done many other trips into the desert and thing never overheated.

But recently noticed the generally there was more heat being raidated from the engine bay. Aux fans always on even without A/C on and these are suppose to come on in extreme condition to help out the cooling system. System was always pressurized and expansion cap was always slightly hissing !

And knowing LR radiatord for being notorious for getting clogged I decided not to tempt fate and go in for a recore.

And Boy just in time after splitting open the rad the core was what I would say 60% blocked if not more. The lower 4 lines were as if some had poured concerete in them ! Some had some kind of siliconeish deposits. In generally VERY VERY BAD SHAPE ! I was absolutely gobsmacked that thing was cooling at all let alone cooling well !!!! Anyways recored with core with pipes atleast twice the size of of the OEM ones.

Now temp guage sits slightly lower even after a 3 hour highway run, no hissing and not much pressure at all just opened the cap a little a little hissing for 30 seconds and then gone, the took of the cap right off.

Man I'm glad I did this when I did this !

My Old Rad. Not it bad shape from the out side at all from teh outside save from the small fan damage due to a loose water pump bearing, now changed.

An DAMN ! some real nasty stuff ! Kudos to the LR cooling system that it still cooled perfectly in 40+ conditions even in this state

The brand new shiny core as you can see the pipes are much bigger than the stock ones

Most expensive job on the LR till date cost almost 180 USD

Thanks PT, 70 USD darn thats cheap specially when compared to here as almost everything is cheaper here !

Well actually I could get it done for just under a 100 USD but I know this dude and many of my mech friends also say he is worth it. Plus the core was also ordered from one of the better heat transfer factories.

You can get a shady job with shitty cores most of which have there pipes split after a few months.

I know a friend who put in a ready made local made cheapo rad put in his land cruiser it laster less than a day and the top tank split open ! :ack:

Good job! My local rad shop wants almost $70 to recore a Rover rad...

I buy new!

Damn...that's too good to be true, PT! I carried in the old rad to a reputable place and they said it wasn't economically worth the trouble of recoring...so I bought new. Haven't had an issue since....
