I'm getting set to replace my Radiator on a 2001 disco 2. I have gone through the Rave/workshop manual steps and, although tedious, it all seems fairly straight forward. Just curious if anyone has any tips or tricks or good photos. Any help is appreciated.

I just finished swapping my 01 D2 radiator today it was a pretty easy job. I left the fan on and I pulled the battery box, and the air filter box. That gave me the extra room to disconnect the oil and trans cooler lines. The hardest part was getting the horns out to access upper mount bolts.

I did this about a year ago, like you mentioned nothing too complicated just lots of stuff to get out of the way in order to get to the stupid screws that hold it in..

you know you're in for a long day when you have to remove the front signal light housings to take you rad out. :)

D1's a piece of cake.
- disconnect the battery
- drain coolant and motor oil
- remove the fan cover plate (part of fan shroud)
- remove the viscous coupler and fan
- pull up the fan shroud - it is kept by the spring clips on top, and slides in the groove at the bottom of the radiator
- disconnect the coolant hoses (two large ones and two small ones)
- unscrew the oil cooler fittings and disconnect the hoses
- remove the top radiator brackets (one at the driver side also serves as a mount for P/S reservoir)
- pull out the radiator.
... clean up the toxic spill :)

Thanks, Peter! Conveniently I'm due for an oil change and coolant change in the next month or so. Sounds like it could be a 3-for-1 package deal. I don't have the special wrench for the viscous coupler and fan. Is that something I should invest in? It's been long enough since I did my head gaskets that I can't remember what tool I used to remove those parts back then.

D2 should take about 45 mins then bleed it out. No need to take the cooler lines loose. Or the battery out. Maybe the air box but I can't remember.

if you have a fan removal tool/wrench, it wont hurt, or take that much longer to remove it out of the way.

my fan clutch wrench came from a pawn shop for 5 bucks.

only takes a medium strenght whack and spins off in a half a minute.

I use a large adjustable wrench. The craftsman one I have fits perfect.

I'm trying out one of the cheap aluminum D1 radiators. No problems so far.

I've got a year into my el-cheapo Silla rad... seems to work fine down here in the hot southwest.
